Was there ever really a problem with grilled lettuce?

>> No.10996161

It's probably good

The problem is lettuce. There's plenty of better leafy greens

>> No.10996805

Think it was Ramsey who autistically sperged out in it

>> No.10996823

It's gimmicky as fuck. Add something else that stands up to grilling better in the salad if you want that flavor. Otherwise you're just ruining/wilting the lettuce. Fyi I have had it before, very disappointing.

You're right, I'm watching it now and he stands up and obnoxiously calls the attention of the entire restaurant before he even tries it.

>>10996147
He does have a point though, it's hard to ensure that it's cleaned properly if it's cut like that.

>> No.10996926

lettuce literally tastes like nothing. the only reason people eat it is because of its crunchy texture.

grilling it kills that texture and makes a soggy mess of it that still tastes like nothing. its fucking retarded.

You're not supposed to cook it to mush. I think the point is doing it over wood for a smokey flavor that pair well with other ingredients. Ramsey is just being a douche for the TV as usual.

It tastes extremely sweet and cruncy to be honest. People with high sugar diets can't tell how sweet it is.

Ramsey's just not a cultured eater. He's a hack through and through, and not an intellectual giant either, hence the foul language versus a wider vocabulary. You only have to watch his India travel show and hear his comments and understandings to all his observations to understand what an utter sheltered life he's had surrounded by bad food and low class people. He's barely left his bubble. Americans truly do get more exposure to european food than him.

Grilling romaine is part of the salad crazed American diet since the early 80's (not new), and kicking up the flavor of something if you aren't going to be adding meat to it. I don't like greens completed wilted, just grill marks on the surface, and I'm sure most would agree with that if they had it right. I don't like lettuce in soup (some do! ick). Some greens stand up better to grilling than others, and can be cooked or raw, either/or, such as radicchio or swiss chard. Brushing them with something that caramelizes the surface even better or adds flavor is key for a good char, from a simple lemon-olive oil-garlic mixture, pureed anchovies and chili oil, to balsamic-chili jam, or something asian like on bok choy or savoy cabbage.

Do I want my romaine grilled with grilled chicken on a decomposed caesar? Overkill. Nope. Just char one thing. You'll see the char where vegan menus reign, just to keep things interesting for them.

He has run Michelin star French restaurants. I wouldn't say he's a Jack. He's still unlikeable. I like to imagine Marco making him cry.

His name is spelled Ramsay you dolt. Also don't grill the fucking lettuce... if you want that flavor introduce a grilled element to be included in the salad.

you're pretty much on point, however try napa cabbage in asian style soups. I really enjoy it, but just be careful with it, like add it on top of the soup and eat it fast enough.

I love all cabbage, and use it often. Savoy is my favorite for slaws.

We should stop talking about Ramsay now. He's a hack, drug addict, drunk, misogynist, dirty dog, amoral human. He might also be gay, the kind that belittles them publicly and hides in a closet.

i really doubt most of those adjectives you used but whatever.
anyways, cabbage isn't that far off from lettuce imo, maybe handles heat a bit better but still. new ideas are always welcome and there's literally no rule when or how to use whatever someone wants. any recipes with grilled lettuce/cabbage you want to share?

Charred cabbage served with browned butter and lemon juice is really great. Dunno why someone would want to grill something as pleb and tasteless as lettuce.
