They have no home or natural habitat aside from what we give them. A world with no beef industry is a world with no cattle. And cattle are sweet animals who are generally given a comfortable enough life by reputable ranchers.

I can't believe morality posting is allowed on the cooking board but addiction posting isn't, I'm definitely more annoyed seeing proselytizing than drunk ramblings. I definitely don't feel terrible because I already know meat's produced under terrible conditions, but also life is suffering and the suffering ends with the death of the animal. It's not like the suffering builds as some tangible force, and you'd be hard-pressed to come up with a convincing argument based on suffering without a theological base, and I assume most vegans are atheist or some kind of bastardized quasi-spiritual wook. Anyway, once I've chosen not to care about the suffering and the animal dies, the suffering is erased and we can all go on our merry ways.

I only felt terrible about eating meat when I was eating it every day without ever seeing what was necessary to acquire it and thinking about the animals that had to die for it. I gave it up for years but it started to affect my health so I only eat it once a week now, and I'm very careful to never waste any animal products. I accept that it's natural and that I have to eat it sometimes but I'll still be happy when I can just have lab-grown meat instead.
