Its actually not as sweet as you would think. The body of the porter is very dark, and has a savoury bitterness to it. The sweetness from the added ingredients are tasted as a slight note which goes alongside this natural bitterness for a full bodied flavor. Worth noting the ingredients are added during the process and aren't added as artificial flavorings after. The same is done with thick stouts, as in pic related.

Wrong
>>10924667
Wrong, there is nothing special about how stouts and porters are brewed, they are just ales whose grain bill features barley which has been cooked or "malted" longer and are therefore darker and accounts for the difference in flavor. The color difference is due to the presence of roasted barley which doesn't add much else because it usually comprises less than 1% of your total grain bill. The term "imperial" refers to any beer recipe that calls for a doubling of the grain bill to water ratio. The yeasts used in beer naturally die before they can ferment all those extra sugars.

The fuck are you talking about? What does "special" even mean in this context?
>they are just ales whose grain bill features barley which has been cooked or "malted" longer
Well they are roasted, quite analogous to how coffee is roasted, in addition to the typical malting process, not malted longer
>color difference is due to the presence of roasted barley which doesn't add much else
Very wrong, it adds quite a bit of flavor, precisely the flavors that define the style. The reason it is such a small portion of the malt is because of how intense the flavors are
>The term "imperial" refers to any beer recipe that calls for a doubling of the grain bill
Kinda, its more just a term for strong versions of a style these days most especially in ABV, but typically also in whatever other flavors are defining of the style. All use of the term however derive from the concept of the "Russian Imperial Stout". Apparently originally invented as a very strong stout brewed as a gift to the Tsar

>> No.10924767

>>10924724
>The yeasts used in beer naturally die before they can ferment all those extra sugars.
There are yeast strains that have evolved to tolerate fairly high ABVs, typically really strong beers have more residual sugar than light beers, but there is no specific correlation, just general style tendencies

>>10924724

Pale ales are just damn refreshing. Bitters are pretty based though. If I see one on time I'll almost always go for it because they arent a very well represented style in the states. A local brewery just took their bitter off their tap list because it didnt sell well. Don't know why people ignore them here
