Depends m8. What are you after? Sweet, smoky, floral?
A good starter is buffalo trace, which is bourbon so it's got a bit of a caramel-like sweetness.
Glenfiddich 12yo is the essential starter scotch, it's got slightly dry, sweet and fruity taste. After trying that and you decide you want to play around with peat, try Talisker 10yo if you want to break into it gently or Laphroaig 10yo if you want to jump in the deep end.
Jameson and Tullamore Dew are decent Irish starters, a bit sweet and a little smoky.

whisky isnt bad but ive never met anyone who is a ~whisky enthusiast~ or whatever who wasn't a total retard who unironically thinks like op and drink mostly swill and say actually good smooth whiskys are bad

i think it's sorta like how americans view spicy food -- it's not about the flavor, it's about proving that they're hard by eating the spiciest thing possible. so similary, pasty white numales with more money than hair go for bottom shelf swill whisky and say it's good that it burns and tastes like medicine to act hard, even though whisky is not supposed to be that way.

maybe a better analogy is IPAs, like how all IPAs these days are overly bitter and taste of nothing but hops, because MUH HOPS BEER OMG SO NATURAL SO ARTISANAL even though a proper IPA should be fairly light and easy-drinking, or how coffee nerds sperg out trying to get as tannin-rich and bitter a brew as possible despite coffee having traditionally been more mild and flavorful than outright bitter like eating garden weeds

i'd like to try distilling sometime but it sounds like it takes a real long time and needs a lot of babying to be safe, both in terms of the still not catching fire and the alcohol being properly sectioned off from the things that make you start to die. but mostly just the still not catching fire or leaking and making a mess or something

i'm no whisky connaisseur but i'm pretty sure it shouldn't leave your throat feeling like you just drank straight lemon juice. that's what i mean by "smooth", i.e., "isn't rubbing alcohol"

but please, enlighten us about ~proper whisky terms~ and which particular jack daniels swill is the best bourbon on earth and shit

is it because of something like how only champagne from champagne can be called anything other than "sparkling wine", or is it closer to something like JD just being such swill made out of petroleum byproducts and runoff from animal feed production that it can hardly be called a drink at all

I don't know about all the opinion, but as I wrote and you can look it up in law. JD is not bourbon and you will not find the term "bourbon" on any of their bottles. Personally I find it pretty vile.

You clearly haven’t met actual whisky hobbyists then because most despise bottom tier blended whiskies outside of Wild Turkey and sometimes Mellow Corn. Most highly rated whiskies on sites like whiskybase are coastal peaty meaty and fruity whiskies like Port Ellen or old school sherrybombs from Glendronach, Macallan, Tamdhu, Mortlach and Glenlivet. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

exactly, i'm saying that 90% of "whisky people" in fact don't know what they're talking about and don't even like whisky, and only claim to like it and go through with drinking it as part of virtue-signalling and posturing

don't buy scotch under $50
at the $30ish pricepoint get a bourbom like four roses, small batch if you want something slightly nicer, or get something like bulleit rye whiskey (don't get bulleit bourbon it sucks)

Bourbon is whiskey made in America with a mash bill of at least 51% corn and aged in oak casks at least a couple months. Straight bourbon is aged 2 years in oak minimum.

Jack might as well be corn flavored vodka.

Not just oak barrels. NEW oak barrels. Important distinction, as many if not most other whiskeys deliberately use old barrels, often times old bourbon barrels.
