Winner winner, pot of Kraft Dinner...

>> No.10748672

me and my brother are trying to get out of a bad situation and survive the best we can. our last trip to the grocery store was:

2 lb. great northern beans
5 lb. red potatoes
2 yellow onions
1 red onion
3 jalapeno peppers
1 lb. bacon
36 eggs
1 pkg. hushpuppy mix
2 pkg.. bologna
2 loaves bread
2 pkg. tortilla chips
16 oz. velveeta
2 cans rotel

we have bacon and eggs for breakfast and save the grease for the potatoes. fried bologna sandwiches and chips & dip for lunch. dinner is beans, fried red potatoes with onion, jalapeno hushpuppies, and raw red onion.

eating pretty good considering the situation, but we're both craving beef. when we get some more income, we're going to make some chili and burgers.

Bacon is pretty expensive compared to other meats in my experience. If I was on a really tight budget I'd probably just buy cheese instead, can get like 2 lbs of okay cheese for $4, but bacon is about $4 for 1 lb.

Cabbage is really cheap and pretty healthy, just steam it and add a little salt and vinegar for flavor or cook it with the beans if you feel like you need more veg in your diet.

You can also consider soups. Buy some chicken, pasta and some vegetables such as carrots, leeks, parsley root or celery.
Pour water into a pot with meat and vegetables, add pepper, salt and heat it on low fire. You'll get a nice good chicken soup that you'll serve with pasta. Take out meat, fry it and serve with potatoes/rice/buckwheat. You can eat the vegetables with the soup or with the meat, your call. Personally I always eat carrots and parsley root with my soup and feed celery and leeks to my dog.
If you have leftover broth, you can always add some tomato puree and sour cream and voila - you have tomato soup. It's versatile as fuck and cheap to begin with.

I've been a poor student for fuckin 6 years now, living off ~$1000 a month (which has to cover bills, rent etc). I know I need a job etc.

Spices, pasta and rice are key. In Australia meat tends to be expensive so tins of tuna are a must have. If you're lucky you'll be near an Asian grocery and you can get recipe bases from there for quite cheap (eg $0.79 nasi goreng base) which you can make super tasty stuff with. Markets are key for produce, as super markets are nearly twice as expensive.

Even something as simple as cooked/drained pasta tossed with some butter and soy sauce can fill you up. Even better if you crack some homebrand tuna in with it. Eggs are good as they can turn 2 minute noodles into something else, very tasty if soft boiled ala ramen eggs.

Basically learn to enjoy Asian (Thai, Indonesian etc) flavors and you can eat poor but tasty foods.

Cheap wine is your friend if you want to drink, at least in Aus as it's taxed differently to spirit and beer.

This has a little upfront cost but it's a relatively inexpensive meal prep type of thing with some variations so you're not actually eating the same thing every day.

First you need a crock pot (or a pot and the ability to maintain the right temperature, idk look it up) and a few chicken breasts. Toss them in with some chicken stock, one can/juice box thing will do. You can add some liquid smoke and a teaspoon of salt here if you want.

Cook on low for like six hours. The chicken should shred easily. Shred it all and store that in Tupperware. Now you have a fuck ton of versatile easy to use protein. You can make dozens of meals with this meat, and depending on how much you made it should last a week of dinners, maybe even lunches.

Some options:
>shawarma
Just add spices, Google it if you don't have a mil who brings you some from Lebanon twice a year like I do. Sorry I can't be more specific. Serve with pita and some mayo mixed with garlic. Tomato and white onion are good too, or try it with hummus if you like that.
>fajita/quesadilla/chicken taco
Buy fajita or taco spice, mix with a little water, toss the chicken in it. Heat and serve with tortilla or tortilla chips, cheese, salsa, guac, whatever you've got.
>bbq sandwich
Sauce, buns.

Can also do sandwiches, chicken salad, probably buy a chicken tiki masala sauce and some rice, try some pad thai type thing.. Shredded chicken is super versatile. You can just serve it with rice if you want, just fill in the blanks.

Hopefully this is helpful for someone. We make it every month or so, usually enough for two to last a couple days.
