some are, some arent. it depends how much the event costs.
people being gross is something you cant avoid, but usually people are ok. also usually there is a dome and or sneeze guard in most events for adults.
sternos+lids keep food as hot as possible, even though it can be in the danger zone for up to 4 hours.
even in a normal restaurant you couldn't tell if someone dropped/spit on your food so hats the difference?

At work, all of our food is served in a buffet. I've never once gotten sick from eating at a buffet. I've had 28 years to get sick from a buffet and it's never happened, just got nauseated once at a cheap chinese buffet but it didn't last more than one evening.

However, sometimes, it can be worth it, if you go to a nice enough joint. I live in Vegas, and there's enough good places where I can eat Alaskan King Crab legs into infinity. And if you're with a group of people, it's a decent way to make sure everyone gets their fill with enough variety for everyone.

With 16 people, 3 of whom will only eat salad, 3 who will only eat pizza, four looking for steak, and six who don't really give that much of a shit? Take them to a buffet, instead of Denny's or something. That way your fat cousin can eat 12 lbs of shortribs and the rest of you can shame him.
