no it's not. I don't believe in universal morals and I'm fine with livestock farming.
This is where the hostility lies as two belief systems contradict, one considering themselves to have moral high ground through consuming a plant based diet.

You can't have ethical consumption under capitalism. We've all already lost.

Of course I'm concerned about that too and try to avoid certain things. Veganism (I'm vegetarian actually) had never been about complete purity bullshit, it's about doing what you can. I can't stop animal experimentation because I need my medicines to live, no vegan will ever attack me for that.
I always saw it as a positive, forward movement that has been needlessly antagonized by the media... Even though there are a few nut cases. Because a lot of vegans dehumanize and belittle non-vegans just as much as non-vegans do it to vegans. When you see vegans laughing at people for becoming allergic to meat because they got a disease from a tick and they ignore all the other suffering that the person will experience from the disease you start to see some people treat it like a cult that views non-members as dirt. The first post has "meatcuck" in it, so it was already off to that.

I find that vegans who do it for purely moral reasons are more tolerable than the ones who try to say being vegan is healthier though, because they're more open to things like lab-grown meat and recognize there are some benefits to eating animal products. They just have a problem with modern factory farming mostly, which even meat eaters should agree with.

There's a ton of misinformation that gets spread around by some vegans because they're fine with skewing stuff to make it seem like they're inherently better in every way which also makes people really dislike them too. Like the image that gets posted once in a while saying 100g of beans has the same amount of protein as 100g of beef, but the info is for uncooked beans and they're totally inedible like that. Or that 100 calories of broccoli has the same protein as 100 calories of beef, but 100 calories of broccoli is like 11 ounces and 100 calories of beef is 1.5 ounces.

Meat eater opposed to factory farming here. Mainly because "industrial" food is so lacking in flavor compared to true "free range". (Produce included, BTW) The modern focus on both plant and animal foods is all about cheaper rather than better. But damn you dont have to go full on vegan to avoid factory farming. You can get small amounts of high quality meat that is NOT from factory farms instead. Why throw the baby out with the bathwater?

So here's a question: What if you had your own cow and chickens?

Cuz I mean, bluffing about health benefits aside, veganism is a big "ethical" thing, right?
So what if there was no industrial farming and "animal exploitation", and you just had a cow and a few chickens that you took good care of?

I mean, if that still wouldn't be okay, then I don't know how to describe vegans except "Vegetarian fundamentalists."

Well some stats show that 70%+ of vegans/vegetarians go back to eating meat at some point. I was a vegetarian on and off for a long time until I went a year without meat and had really strong cravings for iron. It kind of made me learn how to recognize when I actually need meat and helped me to not overconsume it, and during that time I also found out about lab-grown meat.

For me it was partially from factory farming and all that, but I also watched a lot of videos of botched slaughters and felt pretty bad about it. So just buying free range meat in smaller amounts wasn't a perfect solution to me either. I think it's a good thing to do for now but am still hoping for lab-grown meat to be available in stores soon.

I just don't feel right if I don't get enough protein from animal products with my meals. I love beans and nuts and whole wheat bread and all that stuff, but I still know pretty much right away if I haven't gotten enough protein because I'll still feel like I want to eat something even if my stomach is full. So I have eggs or cheese or milk with meals and have meat about once a week.

From what I've seen a lot of "vegans" will eat eggs from chickens that aren't being raised to be slaughtered. There are still some though who view it like a spiritually impure food and won't ever eat it, because they think it'll make them want it again at other times when they don't have those 100% perfect situations where they can get it.

>> No.10556241

I like the flavor of a lot of mushroom and bean burgers that you can make yourself, but my problem with them is they always have to have breadcrumbs or oats added and it becomes too starchy, especially when it's on a bun. It'd probably be okay served like a Salisbury steak with some kind of sauce and no bun, but TVP burgers are better in my opinion.

I seriously think the human brain is just hard-wired for religious thinking. Cuz even the people who get real "progressive" and irreligious on an intellectual level will pretty much INSTANTLY fall into this thinking when it comes to ideological (and in this case, dietary) purity.

Probably, I mean at some point pretty much everything in nature has had religious importance to someone. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing though. Someone placing more importance on meat by viewing it on a spiritual level and recognizing that an animal had to be killed for them to have it is better than someone who thinks it's just like any other food and is okay with wasting it. It's only bad when you become closed-minded with it and think you know everything.

Well that's the rub, innit?
With the various progressive-types, they unwittingly fall into religious thinking, but unlike an actual civilized religious person, who thinks "These are my beliefs, I'm not gonna be an asshole and shove it in people's faces", they think, "My superstitions are FACT" and let confirmation bias (Like some of these infographics ITT) rule their thinking.

>"These are my beliefs, I'm not gonna be an asshole and shove it in people's faces"
There are a lot of religious people who don't follow that line of thinking obviously but it's probably more commonly taught among religious people than it is with progressives. A lot of progressives thrive on what is basically proselytizing and they don't realize it. It's probably why there's been such a backlash against SJWs, radical feminists, etc. because they still think they're being progressive without realizing they're basically what conservatives were to a lot of younger people 20 years ago. Instead of saying something is Satanic like conservatives were constantly doing back then, they come up with some word to say it's bigoted without further explanation. I've been seeing more progressive-types trying to temper that kind of thinking lately though, so some people do recognize it's a problem.
