Not sure how old you are but for me it was because my grandparents grew up without much luxury and had to be very frugal...their kids were also total cunts...so when a polite quiet grandkid like me visited they wanted to let me have anundance they never had. Also grandma was a bit out of touch in health concerns, cooking everything im butter and baked goods made with legit bacon grease. She even told me smoking is ok because then men in my bloodline never coughed and were strong lol. Delicious food though shed make.
