Never had a drop before? Start with Jack. You'll drink it and think "wow this is awful" and never want it again.
Wait three years and go to a dinner with your grandfather who insists you drink a glass of Buffalo Trace with him, even though you tell him you aren't a fan of whiskey, he says you need more hair on your chest
You drink the Buffalo Trace and still think it's awful, but after a few glasses it really isn't so bad.
Wait a few more months and you're bringing this girl that you've been on. few dates with home for the first time. Go to binnys and buy a bottle of Buffalo Trace, but when you check out listen to the really tall guy in the aisle with you when he says to try angels envy instead, and to drop an ice cube in for your lady when she drinks it
That night you give the lady a glass of whiskey, which she tries and says is pretty good. you keep chatting and she says she should go home early because she has work tomorrow, leaving without finishing her drink. after she leaves, you drink her whiskey, the rest of yours, and another few fingers out of the bottle and go to sleep

when you wake up in the morning you will have a desire for nothing else but the sweetness of your own breath after drinking a nice glass of whiskey.

>> No.10432276

What is the reason people put ice in their whisky? Is it because the colder your whisky is the easier it is to drink? Or is it because when it melts it adds water and therefore you taste less alcohol?

>> No.10432284

>>10432276
both. cooling down booze lessens the "bite" of the alcohol, though it supresses other flavors too. Adding a little bit of water (on the level of a few drops) increases the flavor a bit. But of course having a lot of ice melt in your whisky only dilutes it.

I don't think anyone is actually "into" Johnny Walker, it's just that literally every liquor store on planet earth sells it, and at the worst dive bar humanly possible, Black Label is the ubiquitous least horrible option if you want to drink something brown

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Jefferson’s. Cheaper than bulleit and woodford and much more on the smooth end than the sharp end like bulleit.

Easily the best whiskey for the price and widely available now.

OP if you have a lot of money just go to a knowledgeable whiskey bar and throw stacks down looking for recs with a good bartender.

Same goes for heavily peated whisky

I don't have anything against stuff like that to break up the monotony, just like putting cream and sugar into coffee every now and then is fine, but if that's your main preferred default every day style you have bad taste

This being /ck/ of course a lot of people are crazy about that stuff. It's the same spergs who can't eat a meal without dumping shitty hot sauce all over it, invariably without even tasting it first

>> No.10436312

What’s the deal with Jack Daniels? Do people hate it just because it’s probably the most popular brand there is? Or do people hate it because it’s genuinely shit?

>> No.10436371

It's good for the price. I'd say its even excellent depending on how much you can get it for. People that bash it will bring up how it pales in comparison to a bunch of single malts or whatever but not address the price difference.
I think groose line is good for op because if its actually your first drink you're not going to taste shit and $50+ will be wasted. On the flip side you don't want actual rubbish because then you're conditioning yourself to associate whiskey with a rubbish taste and not really giving yourself a chance to develop.
In a similar fashion to goose, jb and teachers form the bang for buck trio imho.

Jack is overly sweet and has no other real flavor characteristics beyond that. It really only exists to be mixed with coke so college kids can get fucked up faster at parties.
It is also, IMO, horribly over-marketed to the point that it's more of a lifestyle brand than beverage brand (Harley Davidson, Wrangler Jeans, Budweiser & Jack Daniels! MURRICA!).
It is the noobest of noob whiskey almost entirely because of merch & marketing.
