I absolutely despise self check out.
About 7 years ago when the first ones started to appear in my stores I was like alright bet this looks great.
But now I refuse to use them. They are literally designed to make us work for the store for free. I demand an employee discount if I’m going to have to do the job of someone who used to work there. The other issue is most of the stores in my area have gotten rid of every single cashier and only have these things; until you’ve made the mistake of going to the store the day all the WIC gets handed out and the self checkout is the only open checkout you don’t know true pain.

Fuck self check out, fuck capitalist swine making me work for free, and fuck stores that only open one additional aisle.

Those things scare me, they are designed to make queues faster and that puts a lot of pressure on me. What do I have to do? What buttons do I push? Do I put everything together? What if the laser doesn't work? What if the code is damaged? What if my card is refused? Meanwhile there are other people in a hurry looking at me and wondering why I'm so slow, judging me and remembering my face.
Fuck this shit.

the local supermarkets in my town open around 7am, but only turn the automatic checkouts on at 8am - 9am due to high amounts of shoplifting from people heading to work (my town has a meth problem).

The upper end grocers around here don't have self checkout machines and never will. They are unlikely to go out of business, unless the economy implodes, and I really mean implodes, not just suffers a recession or even a depression.
Those stores are where the housekeepers for the old money shop, they don't pay in the store it goes on a tab, and then it all gets boxed up and delivered, because god forbid even the help should need to lift a finger.
I wish I could shop there all the time, but I'm not old money, and the extra $15-25 it would add to my weekly grocery bill hurts my budget too much. The produce is nice and not that much more expensive though.

I'm Dutch and stayed in Australia for a while, Aussie self checkouts are shit, the weight-check thing that prevents stealing only works instantly half of the time, it's pretty slow and awkward to use. Going to let you guys in to a little secret here with Self Checkout units in stores (I'm 3rd level support for a major chain, often speak with high ups in the business side)
They're operated at a loss and actually slow down the checkout process on average.

The reason why they were originally introduced in the late 90s was from an attempt to help speed up getting customers past the checkout lanes and doing so with less employees. After a decade of pounding the square peg in to the round hole it was deemed to be a failure across the whole industry.
So why is it that it failed in the 2000s but we still see them today? Customers were conditioned to expect them now. Customer serveys show that customers, even if having to go though a slower, more fustrating process for checkout are now so accustomed to seeing them in stores that they demand them.
They literally only exist now due to customer conditioning, not because its good for the customer or business even. When they're installed everyone loses BUT the customer THINKS they won.

Now that many chains are aiming to do delivery and/or order online and pick up in your car, much of the industry that uses SCO lanes are trying to find a way to get rid of them and condition customers to their replacements.
