It was one of the first big barrel aged beers distributed fairly widely. It's good, but you can find comparable stouts locally now in most states

>> No.10392227

>>10392173
Big ABV barrel aged stouts get hype. Also they cost way the fuck more to actually make so the price being higher does make sense to a point, and I totally think most of these barrel aged stouts are delicious though so I get it.

KBS was one of the first big barrel aged stouts, and kind of created the whole idea of once per year release of a big specialty beer (alongside Goose Island's Bourbon County Brand Stout). Basically Founders only makes one batch per year, and this takes a while to make as it barrel ages for like 9 months or something, so the release becomes a sort of event. It was one of the first beers to get the kind of hype where it sells out in most liquor stores extremely quickly, and it is still one of the only one's that can do that in such a wide distribution
Now barrel aged stouts are much more common than even 5 years ago, but still most of them are only released once per year, and at many smaller breweries its brewery only sales and you have to line up when they open and its a whole event

Yeah, I didn't know the history of it but I get that barrel aged always gets people hyped. There's a brewery here in Brazil, Bodebrown, making series of different beers aged on french wine barrels or whiskey barrels, it seems that all most respectable ones are doing it now here.
The fact that it was widely distributed and all makes sense but in 2018 there are lots of others doing it so I didn't get why the hype stood til this day.

>> No.10392269

>>10392244
Its still a really good example of the style, and basically any big barrel aged stout will still get hype.
Also Founders is in a great position with really good name recognition in a large geographic area but not big to the point where people don't want to be associated with them anymore like Sam Adams or Goose Island (and this is largely a credit to the quality of their beer)

>> No.10392291

>>10392269
Bourbon County still creates lots of hype, no? Two best rated beers on untappd, even though these are not the latest batches. idk a lot about american breweries, but why doesn't people like to be associated with GI?
(Side note the market on the corner of my house was having a sale for their Honkers Ale, which I'm not really into, but I still brought a 4-pack. It doesn't stand out for me but it's okay-ish, I'd guess they go from Bourbon County to macro-brewery quality on some beers and that would be the reason)

>> No.10392370

>Bourbon County still creates lots of hype, no
Yeah, it totally does, just saying the Founders has maintained a better reputation in general. I for instance am pretty likely to try any new barrel aged beer from Founders without putting much thought into it, most of their Pale Ale's too, but probably won't do the same for a Goose Island beer unless I specifically hear its worth trying

Also, part of it is the fact that Goose Island was bought by Anheuser Busch, but a big part is that most of their base tier beers are mediocre, they were ahead of their time in the 90s but have struggled to keep up in the time I have been drinking beer (at least as far as beers for people who really are into beer like, I am sure their overall sales are higher than ever)
I can go to any grocery store around here and get Founders Breakfast Stout, or Azacca IPA, and there just are not any base Goose Island beers that live up to that

>>10392518
Yeah, but they're still killing it on the cheaper segments here in Brazil at least. Lots of people get started on different beers because of the wide distribution and cheap prices of AB Inbev owned breweries.
I'm all in for supporting smaller breweries, which always come up with better, more quality and more creative stuff, but when 4 cans of NE IPAs cost the same as a minimum wage it's hard to compete. US and Europe have a much more competitive market given the interest in developing is old.
BTW if anyone have some spare time, this gives some insight in how the market started to grow down here. It has English subs. https://youtu.be/JHby9IBjiFw

Yeah, I totally don't blame you for that. here the price difference is pretty small if anything (though I live in a state with low prices to begin with, it might be larger in less beer friendly states)

I think a big part of the strategy of the big brewers is, and has to be, to get good beer to non-American markets before many local brewers take advantage of the obvious potential. There is so much potential for better beer to become more popular in so many places

>> No.10392688

>>10392620
Yeah, pushing their own stuff to non-American markets is a good way to ensure they can dominate these markets before micro breweries grow larger.
On the documentary I posted its a funny case because DUM, a micro brewery, made the recipe for Petroleum and made a deal with a medium sized brewery, Wäls, so they could produce Petroleum too using DUMs recipe, and selling it with the same name. Wäls was brought by Ab-Inbev right after and the folks at DUM weren't very happy with this.
Both still produce Petroleum.
