The 1970s had disco, fondue sets, and ten speeds
The 1980s had shoot em up action films, whisky "rocks" that were literal rocks from Scotland, and BMX
The 1990s had mass sci-fi "culture", home beer kits, and mountain bikes
The 2000s had online video game "culture", "I'm really into carbon steel knives lately", and fixed gear
The 2010s had nazis, sous vide, and touring bikes

What's the next version for the food slot in this trio and what will be in the hands of the hipster?

Please note, if you are still "into knives" or if you play video games, you are invited to participate in any other thread. This is a thread for people who pay attention to culture.

Somewhere in the 1960-1970s people were really really into Bananas Foster.

Somewhere between the 1980s and 1990s people were really really into Chocolate Lava Cake.

I still think lava cake is one of the kings of desserts, but any time you see one, some hipster douchebag goes
>hey 1990 called it wants its dessert back XDD

I think it's because the average lava cake you find now is a nasty thing, microwaved from a frozen box, and is filled with sodium pyrophosphates and high fructose corn syrup. We're seeing the same happen to the reputation of sous vide as fast casual joints have embraced it.

Good point.

I always thought sous vide was a bad meme.
>We want our food to be fully cooked, but to still retain the texture of being raw.
I'm sure it has a few legitimate applications, but for most people it just spawned as part of the molecular gastronomy fad.

Sous vide is for unskilled labor; i can see why they are embracing it.

These days the makers of sous vide equipment are working on ovens and griddles that keep very consistent temperatures. Some even have programmable timers like a slow cooker to get all parts of your dinner done at the same time.

The 2020s will almost certainly be when lab grown or synthetic meats take off.

Many analysts are predicting another recession soon, and for it to be a bad one at that. Hard times can lead to a lot of misplaced anger between social groups, and given the already polarized political climate in America things could easily get ugly.

Yeah if this 25% tarriff goes through we are fucked because the world will simply stop buying shit from us at all. What the fuck trump I thought you were supposed to be the meme emperor.

Fake meats. Vegan meats. Who will be the first fast food restaurant to market test an impossible burger?

Trump retardedly proposed a 25% tarriff on steel and aluminum.

That means that prices on steel and aluminum will be artificially inflated.

That means that the cost to produce and sell any item containing steel or aluminum will be more expensive.

Yeah it's one of the most baffling moves I've ever seen a president make. But with the Canada/Mexico exemption all companies are going to do is just import their steel to Mexico and then have it imported here. Not much will change, of course, this is assuming the exemptions get upheld. Which I'm sure they will.

Do you not know how tariff assessment works? If a Mexican company imports $100 worth of Chinese steel to make $300 worth of products to be exported to the U.S., only $200 of that $300 is exempt from tariff. The Mexican company has to pay Chinese steel tariff on $100.
