Had to throw out about $500 worth of food yesterday because I fucking well forgot to close the freezer properly. If I'd had time I could have made food from it and frozen the food but I didn't have any time.

Don't feel bad, OP, that shit happens. Last August, we were away on a week vacation, and maintenence came in to install carbon monoxide detectors and unplugged our chest freezer, so we came back to hundreds of dollars worth of meat and homemade stock, etc ruined, plus we had to throw out the freezer because it had been sitting with rotten food in it for days.
Also, when I was a kid, my parents freezer door broke (they had an upright freezer), and my mom and I spent days cooking, cooking, cooking so the food wouldn't be wasted.

please tell me where you're going to store your
- whole animals/quarters
- fish in any amount worth purchasing
- meat for winter when you can't go to the store every time you need food
you're full of shit if you're excited to run over to the market when it's -30 degrees because you don't have any meat in the freezer
worth mentioning hunting/fishing because there's not much sense in trying to fill your fridge with an elk or 20 lbs of salmon
obviously not everyone needs a deep freezer, but if you don't live somewhere warm or next to a market you're probably single or stupid to not have one

My fridge is probably around $100, maybe even less. My freezer was filled though. A bunch of meat and some frozen dinners, all of it bought at northern European prices.

Nah I threw it all out. I highly doubt any of it had actually rotten but meat is ruined if it thaws and re-freezes.

Yeah that sucks. How long were you away? Even if it was left alone for two weeks, I'd expect residual cold and the insulation of the freezer would at least keep it from going THAT bad that you'd have to throw out the freezer too?

but yes you have a fair point that i see now, if i lived in like california i'd just fuckin walk down the street to get my meat when i needed, nothing i'd imagine keeping in my freezer in warmer climates other than processed food and pastry dough

We were gone a total of 9 days, so I figure they must have come in the first or second day after we left. But, it was long enough for enough stuff to defrost that a miasma of fetid juices seeped into the bottom of the freezer, so out it went.

I'm >>10060535, and I live in California, and I must have a chest freezer because we go salmon fishing every season, plus trout, and sturgeon. We also make our own sausages, stock, and buy a "quarter" steer from a local ranch. California is more diverse than just LA, SF, and San Diego, you know.
