I know. Even after the "reforms" we just passed (which go into effect in 2018), we're still cucked beyond all reason.

But our local breweries are top notch. I've been to California, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and Milwaukee, and honestly? Some Oklahoma brews put theirs to shame. Too bad most of you will never try the "old formula" f5 Coop IPA. The modern interpretation is weaker ABV, is a more filtered beer (old ones were cloudy), and is served in a mincy 12 oz instead of the 16oz pints of yesteryear. However, if you like IPA, and can ever get your hands on Roughtail's Hoptrometrist, do so. It's worth the money.

I'm not a fan of wheat beers myself, but really? It's just a different flavor. If you like beer, you can't hate wheats. Even mediocre wheats, at worst are just kinda weak beers with no downsides. Now rye beer, on the other hand, tastes like soy sauce if you do it wrong.

>> No.9838590

blue moon and shock top are "belgian whites". Sapporo is a japanese dry "rice lager" (admittedly nearly same as things like budweiser, which uses rice). Oldge English and steel reserve are malt liquor, and are basically as sweet as shock top or blue moon, but about twice the alcohol.

Those are all comparing apples to oranges, and they're all mediocre beers? You want a recommendation on each "style" you mentioned, or some new styles to try, and I can help you out. But if you can't taste the difference between them, then what's the point anyway?

I'm not sure if it's available stateside, but Orchard Thieves is very, very sweet. Same goes for Stella cider. Bulmers is fairly dry, but is pretty middling in my opinion.
This relative resurgence of cider in the US market should bode well for the future. Check around for craft ciders. I can't remember the name, but I had one a few years back from Maine that was pretty good.

We've gone to a few breweries and did tastings, and I'll typically have a few beers with my parents. Usually the commentary doesn't go too far beyond "it's good" or "too sweet." My immediate family shares pretty similar tastes as far as food and drink go, which makes things easier.
Last (only) gf I had, I tried introducing to tea. I really enjoyed teaching her the ins-and-outs of tea, but I don't think it really stuck. It's always great to be able to help someone to appreciate something beautiful that he or she might not necessarily even think twice about.

Tonight's beer was the biggest surprise I've had in a long time. I don't understand how this is only a 91/100 on Ratebeer. This is absolutely world-class and remarkably unique. Somehow tastes like caramel, dates and raisins despite consisting of only water, malt, hops and yeast. Lovely. This was a reasonably priced six pack at BevMo and will become a regular in my fridge. I always expected this to be Celebrator's disappointing cousin and holy shit was I wrong.

The 200th Anniversary Stout is worth a try if you can find it. Very well balanced, more roasty char and chocolate than a normal extra stout.

Supposedly last year there was an uptick in Tequila Barrel aged beers but the only one I had seen was from a local brewery. (Half Moon Bay Brewery made a Tequila barrel aged Belgian Tripel that was fantastic.)

Then Deschutes ages their Abyss in different barrels for different years, these are this years variants while last Years were scotch and brandy barrel aged and the year before that were Rye Whiskey and Cognac barrel aged.

Sup my nig-whores I made a marijuana IPA and my bottle conditioned beer will be ready to drink on Xmas. I live in Alaska so it's legal. I put in a half ounce of fine weed along with 3/4 ounce of hops as well asaalt and boiled some wheat to give it a little structure then aged it a month then racked it 2 times. It's at 6%. I made a pink lotus wine but this ain't the general for that. Thinking about a bread toast ale or something else exotic like hensbane or a gruit ale. Here's a pic of it before racking.
