Jim Beam Black is probably my favorite cheap whiskey. Bourbon specifically. Still not super cheap but I think it falls in a perfect spot on the price to quality curve.

Johnnie Walker Red is the best affordable whisky for me. Not "cheap," but anything less expensive here in Quebec isn't great. I have a bottle of Wiser's that I use mainly for mixing (rye and ginger).

A step up from this (in both price and taste) would be Buffalo Trace. One more step up gets you Woodford Reserve.

I tend to switch liquor stores fairly often, I have about 5 different decent ones in my area and I go shopping for grog about once a week so hopefully to the employee's it looks like I buy booze once a month or so.

It's a good single malt; it'll never blow anyone's mind in terms of complexity and depth, but it has been of consistent quality for decades. Fruity, light and mellow, taste of vanilla, pears and a touch of wood in the 12yo. The 15yo is also a good value, a bit sweeter, somewhat less bitter, although for my taste it sacrifices a bit of its pleasant bite and goes for a lighter style. If available in your area though, the 'Rich Oak' version (14yo) is also a pretty good deal.

For being a sub-40$ blend, it actually gives a fair amount of single malts a run for their money.

The nose is exquisite, not much depth or complexity since it's relatively young, but it tastes almost as good as it smells. No off notes, fair price, and flavors approaching whiskies aged for 15 years and over.

I think tariffs have to do with the high prices of whiskey in Canada. Beer and other types of liquor have similar prices whether they are imported or not, but imported whiskeys are 10 or 20 bucks more than Canadian ones of similar quality. I'm guessing the whisky industry here has a really big interest in people buying domestic.

This is my favorite cheap blend. And as an added bonus it's the cheapest one available nearby.
