Welcome to the /ck/ challenge: Vote Thread: Berries But Not Dessert Edition

****

The theme for this month was Berries In A Savory Context

****

Dishes are judged on the following criteria, so keep that in mind when voting:

-Presentation: The appearance of items on the plate; plating skills
-Originality: Creativity in composing the dish
-Appeal: How appetizing the food looks/whether or not the dish appeals to your personal taste as a voter
-Challenge Goals: How closely the entry followed the challenge goal(s)

The distinction between Presentation and Appeal: If someone submits an artfully arranged but burnt steak as an entry, it may score high in Presentation but low in appeal.

While you're voting, or not voting, why not suggest a theme for next month?
Then people can vote on that, or not.

Hey autists! A little explanation of your votes would be nice. Like why you felt some entries only got 4/5 on challenge goals when others got a 5/5.

>> No.9088894

>>9088625
I base a perfect 5 for challenge goals on how transformed the ingredients were and if the challenge goal was approached in more than one way. If it's just one element simply included in an otherwise ordinary dish it shouldn't get a full 5 IMO

I have to agree with you. I entered this and the last competition and would not even think to question a judge for the simple reason it's their subjective interpretation. It's a benefit if they include their reasoning, certainly not necessary though, and if they do it would be silly to question it.

I did jokingly post >>9088435 though, obviously. Please don't take it as anything other than a bit of shits and giggles.

I'm surprised I got beyond the 50% mark and I'm happy that I did. My photo is blurry, I didn't show the process at all, I have no eye for design and therefore my plating is shit, the dish is an already pre-existing thing and not something I invented, the food itself looks altogether horrible and there's no way to judge what I cooked by its taste. I wasn't expecting to get anything higher than 5-8, 2bqhwy, homie, mostly from people who like curries like the guy in the first thread who said he liked rasam. I certainly wouldn't give myself anything beyond that 5-8 range.

I was pleasantly surprised to break above 10.

I won't go back and write something about each entry but I will give little explanation for my criteria which may not be consistent with the scoring here>>9089622.
Presentation is based on how well I can understand the dish just by looking at it. Artistry matters but more than that the plating should be able to communicate what the dish is. Originality is almost wholly based on whether I would've been able to think of the dish. Appeal is self-explanatory.
Challenge goals is how well the ingredient is incorporated into the dish and also how much of a star it is. So for example a berry reduction may be very well incorporated but it loses some points for being a sidekick in the dish.

Since you asked,

I consider the whole idea of having a cooking contest in which the judges cannot taste the food to be pants-on-head retarded.

It just makes no sense at all, and therefore it's very hard to take seriously. Could you imagine an auto race in which people don't actually drive the cars? How about an art museum where all the paintings and sculptures are covered up so you can't see them?

Of course not, but think of this more like a food porn contest than a cooking competition. Did you know most professional photographs of "ice cream" are actually dyed scoops of mashed potatoes? It all depends on what the motivation is.
I like to watch some cooking programs because I can learn technique or get recipe ideas. I don't give a shit about who "wins". I love to watch Iron Chef, but I normally skip the judging entirely. And the silly stuff like chopped is just ridiculous.

Looking at food or getting ideas is all well and good. But the competition part? Pointless. You can share OC and discuss cooking tips without a contest that makes no sense.

I get it. You 're here for ideas, but that's kinda out there in the ether.

BBQ
Picnic
Starch as a main course
Melon
Legume

It kind of needs to be reachable and ubiquitous for the contestants.
The idea sounds like fun, but you're going to be rating my last night's dinner. Because I wake up and finish it. So http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2015/03/sichuan-wonton-chili-oil-suanla-chaoshou-recipe.html might not be fair compared to someones' eggs and spam.

But it's not /ck/ challenge material.

For many reasons, maybe because not everyone has a job, or maybe they don't have a job where the can cook, or maybe they actually work in the industry and have access to any tool that they may need.

The challenge needs to be ingredients, not equipment.
However, the "slow cooker" idea could work. It's do-able with an oven or range, slow cooker, immersion circulator, rice cooker, et al.

Challenge Goals: 3/5

Cherrywood isn't a berry but it's a nice touch. Blueberry wine is vile in most cases and I have no reason to doubt that in this case, so points deducted there. Just having a berry based sauce doesn't really stack up compared to other entries so can't give full points there. Not even counting the blueberry wine. Mediocre across the board.

Did you brew this yourself? Would have been nice to see any part of the process. I'd give you negative points for presentation if I could because of the mustache glass. Sounds delicious. Not really a dish though.

Presentation: 0/5

I like clam chowder so you get one point for appeal for your otherwise vile bowl of canned clam chowder and whole avocado sitting in front of a disgusting keyboard at your masturbation station.

I'll add my vote to the "low and slow" category, but I think it should be narrowed down to something a little bit more specific. Otherwise you'll just have people cooking food on the floor to serve to people with Down's Syndrome and it will get 3/5 goals.

Thank's so much for the vote, anon- I did use different berries in the other components too but that part wasn't included in the repost. Cranberries in the butternut squash risotto and blackberries with the sprouts. Next time I'll try to make the ingredients more prevalent

Kek. I bought that phone in 2011. The problem isn't the camera, it's that I'm unsteady with it. I should get a tripod attachment or something.

Another for low&slow, eh? Guess I and the two unpleasant posters are the only ones against, huh?
Shame. It's so hot lately, that I just wanted to make and post a banana icebox pie, but I guess I can do something in the smoker. I'd prefer not to use the slow cooker as it will absolutely turn an already bad situation into an unbearable inferno as it did when I cooked cochinita pibil for Cinco de Mayo.

Also, shake-kun is changing his trip code since I searched for it online to find the archive of the old thread and saw some ponyfag using the same one. I don't wanna be mistaken for a ponyfag.

I'm a bit leery on that.
The winner could then choose something they are particularly strong in with a recipe already chosen and practiced, leading to them having an edge in the next month.
Don't worry, the theme for July will be chosen by a person with no "skin in the game", as they say.

As if it won't be entirely obvious who's doing that based on their dish. Besides ppeople could be doing that already. It might generate a little more interest since things appear to be dwindling and there is no real end game besides points. At least in the annual challenge there was something for your efforts. There are ways to do it where it won't compromise the integrity of the challenges, but it was only a suggestion.

Then the challenge was overtaken by trolls, causing Yellowmug not to win.

Then Bubble pulled out, leaving Borneo, who only has grandmother cred here.

Then Borneo pulled out, the challenge became a monthly OC thread with nothing at stake, and some nobody al/ck/ took over without any kind of plan to make it seem official.
