Is drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day really beneficial or just a meme?

You do need a significant amount of water every day but:

1. Your body signals thirst long before it would become a problem, dehydration is not a risk in any first world country unless you're in the wilderness and didn't plan ahead. It will be painfully obvious if you reach dangerous levels of dehydration.

2. A balanced diet will provide the vast majority, if not all, of the water you need every day. Water is in a lot of foods, in varying amounts.

So generally you don't need to worry about going out of your way to drink water, but opting for water over another drink to sate your thirst is definitely good for you.

>> No.8056503

Drinking water is actually a really good way to feel "energized". If you feel tired or sluggish, a lot of the time it really is that you're under hydrated.

Your body will be dehydrated to some extent long before you feel thirsty, which is why athletes are instructed to take on water at intervals when training and all training computers (watches, etc) will have programmable alerts to advise the athlete to take on water (or food).

So, yes. You definitely DO need to "go out of your way to drink water".

And you have yet to provide a link supporting your claims.

Dehydration is like bleeding, it is a condition that stems from another issue. Many many children have dehydration as why they are hospitalized too, due to diarrhea or vomiting.

there is definitely lots of truth to what he's saying but my issues are as follows:
>1 fatties often are fat because they have poor eating and drinking habits from childhood and confuse hunger and thirst and eat when thirsty
>2 fatties drink lots of sugary diuretic drinks and encouraging lots of water is a good way to discourage this
>3 fatties are often a lil fat from retaining water and drinking lots of water causes you to not retain water as it is not treated as a valuable commodity by the body

>At the onset of this condition, fluid outside the cells has an excessively low amount of solutes, such as sodium (hyponatremia) and other electrolytes, in comparison to fluid inside the cells, causing the fluid to move into the cells to balance its concentration.
>This causes the cells to swell. In the brain, this swelling increases intracranial pressure (ICP), which leads to the first observable symptoms of water intoxication: headache, personality changes, changes in behavior, confusion, irritability, and drowsiness.

I don't think you work in an ICU, or at least at a shitty hospital. No way more than half your patients are on urinary catheters unless you're in a specialized ICU in a renal specialty center or some shit. If it is routine for your general ICU to use urinary catheters, flee while you have a chance and seek employment elsewhere before shit goes down eventually.

Intravenous catheters yes, in the arm/hand/neck even.

Even rotary units don't have every patient on catheters.

Don't be afraid to just pack up and leave, an RN or BSN is demanded in pretty much every state. I fled my own due to salaries lower than $38k and patient loads over 25. My clinicals at one point gave me one RN to assist and she had 47 patients.

So I fucking left rhe state.

I think your ICU must have livelier patients than mine, buddy.
Most of mine are septic already and almost all are on antibiotics.
They almost never get UVI either. They get VAP if they get anything iatrogenic.

They're all tubed or trached. They all have a catheter, many need norepinephrine drips to maintain BP, all are carefully monitored which includes noting hourly urine production (something that's a lot harder to do if they're pissing in a diaper, though we do have a weight for the purpose), surprisingly few are sedated but they're generally not in a state where they can tell us they need the bathroom, and certainly not fast enough considering they usually need to be lifted out of the bed.
The catheters also provide us with a core temp.
They all have a CVK in the neck and an arterial cannula for BP monitoring and blood gasses.

I'm well aware of catheters posing a high infection risk but these patients aren't there with stubbed toes and there's no other practical way of dealing with their waste.

I really am guessing your country's definition of an ICU is just different and you think I'm dealing with stable post-op patients or something. I'm not.

If your urine is yellow, then you're dehydrated.

If your urine is yellow and smells strong as fuck, then you're dehyrdated.

Water is vital to regulating pretty much every bodily function, from cooling, to digestion, to thinking.

8-10 glasses is like 2.5 quarts, which isn't shit.

Are you in the USA? I cannot tell, because if every single one of your patients on an ICU after triage is like that, the fuck is going on?

One nurse per patient in the ICU? Every single patient trached? The fuck? I work in a neuro ICU. Most of my cases are concussions, strokes, seizures, etc. Except for those post or pre op or those in a natural or induced coma, less than half our patients are trached. That must mean every single one of your patients is unconscious. How does that even work?

Do you not have NAVA vents that do breaths per minute to help wean people off? Do you not have bedpans with measurements or inserts in all patient toilets?

It is just really wierd that in your general ICU you have every single patient sedated.

Drink as much water as you need to. "8 to 10 glasses" is just a recommendation for people who are too retarded to know what their body needs, i.e. Americans but let's not get into that.

Personally, when I drink too much water, I get annoyed because I have to pee every 10 minutes. But when I don't drink enough, I get a headache from dehydration.
You basically have to find the right balance for your body. If you have a manual labor job or you enjoy working out, it's normally not a problem because your body will tell you when it wants water. But if you have a desk job and sit around all day, you have to decide on your own how much you want to drink.

Real talk now guys

Have a glass/cup when you walk up and before you go to sleep. Have one when you eat lunch and one or 2 at dinner.

Between breakfast and lunch as well as between lunch and dinner, you will want to have some fruit that has a good amount of water in it.

Tea or coffee, even a glass of juice is fine for breakfast. Just avoid adding sugar to the tea or coffee.

Water is good for you and like others have said, look at the colour of your urine, it should be pale yellow and remember to drink for water when it is a darker yellow. Also drink water when you have been sweating a lot, vomoting or suffering from diarrhea

Oh, and as I said; surprisingly few are sedated. Many of them tolerate the tube just fine. Doesn't mean they can use a toilet or toilet chair, though.

Our ventilators have several different modes ranging from doing all the work for the patient letting us set RF, tidal volumes, inspiration pressure, PEEP, and modes that only assist the patient slightly but rely on him to trigger respiration himself.
Once you have the patient on CPAP-ASB with no inspiration assistance and just the normal PEEP of 5 mmH2O you can extubate and send the patient to a normal hospital ward.
I'm guessing our normal wards have patients that would have been in the ICU in your country.
