In opposition to the most useful kitchen gadget thread. This thread is for the most useless, pointless, waste of space kitchen gadgets.

To start out: The egg slicer.

Who the fuck has ever used one of these things. They have literally one purpose. Who has hard boiled eggs so often that they want one of these and even if they do what's wrong with slicing them with a knife?

It's nice to have around if you just want to crack some pepper really coarse for a steak or crunch some cinnamon for a sauce, stuff like that. They're also cheaper and more durable than a food processor, and they don't have the tendency to heat up spices when pulverizing like food processors do, which really can make a difference in some things, like if using for a tea, delicate poach, or dressing.

Why are you even arguing this? A fruit juicer will get ALL the juice and pulp out of a lemon, orange or grapefruit while using a fork, leaves most of the juice and pulp in the rind and tossed into the trash.

This is an objective fact.

Now if you only need the juice from one lemon for a recipe then yes, just cut it half and squeeze by hand but if you're looking to get a tall cool glass of up-the-the-second fresh squeezed fruit juice, you use a juicer.

I'm against single-use and useless gadgets as much as anybody, but an egg slicer is NOT one of them!

I have one and honestly I rarely use it for eggs. Its awesome for things too small, tedious, or slimy/slippery to do easily a knife.

Examples:
Mushrooms and olives for pizza.
Strawberries, grapes, peaches, pears, bananas, kiwi (oh god, especially kiwi!) etc for fruit salad, baking, layered desserts.
Soft cheeses (fresh mozzarella, bleu, feta)
Ham, spam, hot dogs.

And my personal favorite: Avocado! Instantly turns even a slightly overripe avocado into beautiful perfect slices ready to be added to everything from pizza, sandwiches, wraps, and sushi.

Rice cookers are also super useful for more than rice. Fuck garlic pressers and citrus reamers though. Useless crap.

Can confirm. Dane here, my family had one growing up. All the relatives did too. Pic related is the exact model that my parents still have. It has fine wires rather than "blades", and it's kinda neat in that it's shaped so you can cut the egg crossways or longways.

Whether something is a pointless unitasker or timesaving specialised gadget is entirely dependent on the speaker's cultural stance. I'd consider an egg slicer fairly pointless for me because, although I do eat sliced eggs, I only eat about one or two per month. It's actually true though, which you can easily confirm via basic math, or by simply looking at the difference in wattage between electric kettles sold in the UK market and the US market.

In the US the standard wall outlet is 115 volts with a 15 amp capacity. That means the most powerful you could ever make an electric kettle would be 1725 watts. In practice they will be lower than that, otherwise that single appliance would trip the breaker/fuse whenever it was used. Most American electric kettles are therefore around 1200-1500 watts. A simple look at Amazon confirms this.

OTOH, in the UK the standard is 240V with that same 15A breaker. Thus the power can be up to double the US version. And again, a quick google search confirms the UK models are indeed sold in higher power ratings than the US models.

It's instantaneous. There's no need to wait for the water to boil at all, it keeps it boiling hot.

And as someone who has owned both electric kettles and those air pot things for several years, I can tell you that the insulation on the Jap ones is far far far better than any kettle. They're nuts about energy savings.

>> fucking everyone has then
I get that.
I'm just saying that if you were to choose based on objective criteria rather than "what everyone has" or impulse buys at your local appliance shop, then the Jap version seems like the better choice.

>>That's like saying if you don't have a lot of toast, use the grill, if you use it all the time, get a special catering toaster with a conveyor belt, so there's no need for a toaster.

>>recommend microwaving water
Nobody recommended it. They said that if you don't need boiling water often enough to justify purchasing a device specifically for that purpose then using the microwave is an option.

In the US the microwave is actually faster than a kettle, though that's unlikely to be true in countries with 240V wall outlets.

Yeah, curious, isn't it? I suspect it's because the average person is used to using kettles and don't even know that a better alternative exists. And again the Jap device wins. You just walk up to it and get hot water instantly. No waiting. No needing to fill the kettle first then come back when it's ready. And as far as "pouring" goes, it has a spout that dispenses the water straight into your teapot, mug, ramen bowl, whatever.

>>microwave
I keep repeating that nobody is recommending this if you need hot water often. But humor me here: how is it different than a kettle? In either case you fill a container with water, turn it on, then come back and get your hot water after you hear the beep/whistle/whatever. It sounds like it's the exact same convenience as a kettle. He didn't thank me, he just got annoyed at me for suggesting he couldn't do it by himself. Now whenever I go to his house he tries his hardest to be rude- He usually goes to the kitchen and spends 40 minutes silently chopping bananas into triangle shapes with a knife then makes me watch him eat them just to prove a point.

He HAS BAD PARKINSONS. He shouldn't be using a knife but these products look so fucking dumb that people just get annoyed.

>a microwave doesn't.

Maybe if you have an old one, but most microwaves these days have an auto-cook mode. That works by detecting steam in the cooking chamber, thus it does indeed turn off once the water boils. If you have an old microwave that lacks this feature you can simply do it by time--you know how long to run it for per cup of water. Want to make two cups? Twice the time.

>>A kettle doesn't make your cup scolding hot
So microwave the water in a measuring cup (or whatever) and then pour it into your drinking cup.

>>heating it without boiling so the steam is waiting to explode
While that is technically possible, it's not exactly a common occurrence. It takes a spotlessly clean container and unusually pure water. This doesn't seem like a legitimate complaint to me. It's like worrying about being electrocuted when you grab your kettle while it's still plugged in--possible? Technically. but only under unusual circumstances.
