Cultures all over the world, for example Arab, actually feel disappointed when others dont share their food. In an Indian group you wouldn't even ask, you'd just grab some, and return the favour when you saw them next.

I think it is a reflection of the selfish nature of western culture, the me first attitude, and its really quite sad.

I don't think anyone cares about sparing a few fries, i.e. a reasonable amount. I have a few friends, though, that once the door opens for them to "get a few" fries, they'd take repeated handfuls until someone said something. Then when someone says something, they get all defensive and say "dude you said I could have some". If I could count on everyone taking my fries that they'd have respect and be reasonable, I'd be fine with it. Many people don't know where that line is and they habitually cross it, hence my apprehension in giving food.
