That's a big leap from "boxed wine was mistaken for non-boxed wine". There's good boxed wine out there. If the guy picked a decently made box wine made from the same grapes in roughly the same style, it's not surprising someone mistook the two. It's wishful thinking that all wine is exactly the same. Different colors, different sugar levels, different tannins. It doesn't take an expert to tell them apart. People want to "get back" at those "pretentious snobs", for whatever personal reasons they may have, but it doesn't negate the laws of physics.

In the real world people are not randomly getting mommy's time out moscato and produttori del barbaresco confused. You can stamp your feet all you want but it's like confusing a chicken sandwich and a burrito. They don't taste the same, they don't look the same, and they aren't the same, and if you had ever drank wine even once in your life, you'd understand why.

It's probably based on the story where they took a white wine, put food coloring in it, and asked some experts what grape it was. It's a neat exercise, but people with agendas draw all kinds of crazy conclusions from it that don't logically follow.
