They're one of the unfortunate varieties of nuts that go rancid if you just look at'em the wrong way. They go off really rather easily. Seems many people outside of South America have never had ones that aren't "off."
When good, they taste like unsweetened desiccated coconut shreds, only not quite so dry. Now, if you don't like unsweetened, desiccated shredded coconut nut, as many people don't, you very likely won't enjoy brazil nuts.

Once when I was a kid I was sitting at the kitchen table with my brother, eating some mixed nuts.
He picks out a brazil nut, the last one in the bag.
It looks kind of weird. He bites off half of it, says its fine and offers me the other half.
I have never before or since, tasted something so vile.
My brother is just laughing his ass off while tears run down his eyes, all the way to the sink to finally allow himself to cough it up.

They're still pretty good. I once had an elderly black woman inform me that they used to be called niggertoes. It was a somewhat awkward conversation.
