Dried shiitakes are good, you just reconstitute them in water until they're soft (about 30min to an hour) and then they're good to go. You can even use the mushroom water as a simple mushroom stock.

>if it wasn't for the rampant racism
From my experience there aren't all that many straight up "racists". Generally people seem to be very welcoming aside from a vocal minority like any other country (US, UK, etc etc.). And even then, the signs you see like "No Gaijin" are usually shops run by older folks who don't know any English and want to avoid awkward interactions, if you actually go in and speak Japanese to them, they won't have any issues.

>xenophobia
They're definitely more xenophobic than a lot of other developed countries, but they're pretty much fine with people coming in as long they're well educated and have good prospects. I think their main issue is with immigrants/refuges who want to come and leech off the country, as heartless as it seems, they balance that out by being a second largest donator aid and support funds in the world.

Asians (including Japanese) eat much less soy than amerilards seem to believe. I mean yes you see soy as an ingredient in a lot of things, in small amounts. And tofu is a thing. But just because all the meat substitutes in your vegan food section at Whole Foods have pictures of squinty eyes on them and sesame/ginger/yuzu flavors, doesn't mean asians just hork down a meal consisting of 90% soy by mass for every meal.

wut. japan produces a ton of fruit. people like to joke about $100 square watermelons (which do exist), but in the summer, there's melons everywhere. if anything it's pretty subsidized by the government. obviously you aren't going to find tropical shit like bananas or mango or whatever, but temperate fruit is a pretty big deal in japan.

They certainly produce their own fruit, but they import way more than they produce. As far as I know its not an issue of difficulty in producing it, but one of them only wanting the highest quality fruit available (since fruits are often considered quality gifts/treats). They basically buy up best of every harvest from around the world, thats why their fruit prices are insanely high compared to other places.

Why the FUCK is it so hard to find onigiri in North America? Not even asian communities/supermarkets carry them. As soon as I got to my homestay in Japan, the first thing my hosts did was give me some homemade onigiri after the long flight... it was one of the best things I've ever tasted. Ever since then I've fallen in love with onigiri and am always looking for it. Even when I ask for it in sushi restaurants they just look at me, not even comprehending what I'm asking. Luckily one local sushi chef makes them for me if I ask nicely but this shouldn't be so difficult. It's their equivalent of a sandwich ffs

That's not just plain soy sauce. It's probably something called mentsuyu, which is soy sauce + bonito flakes, mirin, and other stuff.

Was the hot water given to you a bit cloudy? Does it have a taste? I ask because sometimes Japanese like to take the water where the soba was cooked, mix it with a bit of the dipping sauce, and drink it up. Pretty tasty, but too much sodium.

This price is less than 1,500 yen. A fragrance and the taste are light. However, completeness more than a price. I was surprised.

Gomenasai /ck/, my name is Ken-Sama.

I’m a 27 year old American Otaku (Anime fan for you gaijins). I draw Anime and Manga on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior Japanese games. (Disgaea, Final Fantasy, Persona series)

I train with my Katana every day, this superior weapon can cut clean through steel because it is folded over a thousand times, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my sword license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak Japanese fluently, both Kanji and the Osaka dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Japanese history and their bushido code, which I follow 100%

When I get my Japanese visa, I am moving to Tokyo to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Studio Ghibli or a game designer!

I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in Japan!

ok you've never been to japan, but if you ever do, go to somewhere and by some expensive grapes (10,000 per box+). They are literally the best fruit i've ever eaten my entire life.

It's a pretty thrifty measure imo as long as the rice doesn't get too saucy.

This was my poor college student meal when I was in Japan. Still, way better instant noodles than the cup noodle crap they give us here in the States.

You just have to buy what's in season. You can usually find fruit pretty cheaply if you're not picky about perfect looks.

It also helps if you live in an agricultural area. I lived in Yamanashi prefecture, which is famous for their fruits, particularly grapes.

Onigiri are stupid easy to make. Seriously, it will take maybe an hour of your time and you'll make dozens.

Oden. It's ridiculously easy to make, though some of the fish cake / fish sausage ingredients can be tough to come by. Super yummy, though. Great winter dish.

Either you are extremely sensitive to salt or the places you went to served bad food. Unagi-dons and ramen are not considered salty dishes.
