Can we talk about what utter bullshit the non-GMO fad is?

1. no evidence has been provided to show that GMOs are any different to the human body than non-GMO (yes I've heard of the rat study, it's bullshit, they used a breed of rat which is prone to tumors and the study has since been retracted.)

2. if you take away GMOs the planet starves. so its academic whether or not they're bad for you anyway

This is what's fucked about the GMO debate. Monsanto =/= GMO. Yes, Monsanto uses GMOs for some shady shit and they've cultivated GMO crops irresponsibly and fucked up the environment. But the answer is to regulate corporations like Monsanto, not to claim that modifying food somehow makes it inherently bad.

Because most people are retarded and there's already been a wave of fearmongering. Your average soccer mom will see "GMO" and instantly refuse to buy it based on fearmongering and not any actual research she did on her own. Like in the EU, it will kill the usage of GM foods.

Then, the science of genetically modifying crops will be gone. Killed in its tracks by fear, and what may have been a great boon to society would be lost. Imagine if we banned the production of automobiles because they used highly explosive fuel and were extremely unsafe at the time of their invention? These day's it's practically impossible to survive without use of an automobile for transportation, and GM foods are nowhere near as unsafe.

I'm surprised no one has said this yet:

One of the most legitimate reasons to oppose GMO food is the fact that according to US trade law, any GMO crop is wholly owned and controlled by the company that makes it. This means that any person found cultivating a crop that happens to share DNA with a company's GMO crop is technically violating copyright law .

Essentially this means that any GMO crop (which have been engineered to be the strongest motherfuckers out there) that may end up crossbreeding with another crop will yield a generation of crops that are technically that company's and not the person who cultivated them.

And, considering a lot of trade/copyright law is dictated by the US, guess which laws get supplanted in 3rd world countries full of farmers looking to get the most resistant seeds on the market?

it's probably not a good idea to put control of the *world's entire food supply* in the hands of 3 agriculture companies.
