Should alcohol be consumed with, before or after a meal? In what situations or dishes would alcohol consumption positively or negatively affect a meal?

My roomate is throwing a shitfit about all italian food tasting like shit unless he has wine (doesn't matter to him if white or red, as long as its wine) beer with german dishes (the type of beer doesn't matter), sake with sushi (now this he's picky about and only drinks some cold, sour-tasting type). For him, if there is no alcohol accompaniment the meal is unenjoyable. He insists it must be taken with a meal, not before and not after. Is he right or is he trying to justify a drinking problem and shit taste?

Everybody I know thinks I'm a great cook. My secret is to load them up with alcohol before we eat.

This.

Many cultures get this. You'll have an aperitif before the meal. A paired drink with the meal and a digestif after.

If you're having dinner that you've slaved over the pots and pans for or going to a good restaurant, then yes, I mean pairing alcohol with food is a whole thing, no one bar weird soft drink artisans consider pairing soft drinks and whatnot with food

But if you're just eating at a casual place or just having something pretty simple, it's not really a necessity, drink whatever

Your roomie's disregard for a need specific kinds of beers, wines etc. makes him either an alkie or an autist, the latter of which makes for a better roommate

Your room mate sounds like a juvenile insufferable prick. Drink (or not) what you like, when you like, with what you like.Antiquated ideas from the 50's and 60's he learned from mommy, daddie, and back issues of good housekeeping and southern living magazines.

If he had a drinking problem he wouldn't bother with the justification. He also wouldn't want to dilute booze with food.
he's just being pretentious, although he is right, red wine makes an Italian meal.

>> No.6819206

he sounds borderline autismo and possibly alcoholic if he's doing this every day but the pairings you listed are perfectly normal. Cold sour sake with sushi is a bit weird to me because the entire idea of sushi is being able to taste the pure flavour of the fish but whatever I guess, I would worry until he's drinking whiskey with his tendies

It sounds like your roommate is both an autist and also may have a bad relationship with alcohol. If you can't enjoy a meal without alcohol, that's a bad sign.

he's objectively wrong and stupid.
