Tommy Burger- get a chili burger
Philippe Sandwiches- get whatever sandwich you like. Ask for it to be double dipped and tip the unattractive lady at the counter. Get a slice of cheesecake as well.
Find a food truck. I like Danny's tacos, they cruise around LA Live most nights but if you google them you should get a map

Because LA's concept of fine dining is see and be seen, not eating well. Blame Puck. He taught them it was cool to go out again, but he never educated them just what they should be going out for. He was too busy cashing in on CPK and its line of frozen entrees.

My experience is that LA is like a third world country trying to show off at the high end: you're left with very expensive restaurants with deferential service presenting food that no one in the kitchen or the dining room can tell is actually good unless celebrities choose to eat there.

Don't waste your money on scenester shit when it's trash food paradise.

>going to The Hat
>not getting chili cheese fries
You can add pastrami to chili cheese fries, but it's fucking expensive to do so. $6 for chili cheese fries (last time I ate there, which was around two years ago when I lived in Alhambra), or almost $12 for pastrami chili cheese fries.

These are the places I would eat at when I lived in the LA area:
1. Banh Mi My Tho - Alhambra
2. Zankou Chicken - Glendale
3. Porto's Bakery - Glendale
4. Taco Zone - Echo Park (not really worth going out of your way for, you can get tacos anywhere)
5. Sam Woo BBQ - Alhambra
6. Philippe's - Chinatown
7. Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles* - Hollywood (although the location in South Pasadena is always less busy)
8. In-n-Out*
9. Tommy Burger - Hollywood (there's a few locations, but that one was on my way home from work)
10. Bollini's Pizza - Montebello/Monterey Park
11. Noodle World - Alhambra

Zankou Chicken is fantastic, but if you go there I would avoid the one on Sunset/Normandie. That place is a shithole, and they always try to nickel-and-dime you when trying to get extra garlic sauce (which you're definitely going to want) or naan. The location in Glendale, the staff was always very friendly, and if you asked for extra garlic sauce, they would just say "Sure, how many?"

*I know you said not those

OH SHIT, HOW COULD I FORGET?!

12. Langer's Deli - MacArthur Park
Voted best pastrami sandwich in the country by some prominent food writer for the New York Times, which got him a lot of shit from his fellow New Yorkers. Just the #19. You may be tempted to order something else, because they have the number 19 plastered everywhere from their T-Shirts to the little card stands on every table, but trust me on this: get the #19. They apparently make their own cream soda in-house, too. It's good.

You're in LA. EVERYTHING is out of the way. I used to live in Glendale and work in Hollywood. I think officially it's a five-mile drive. When I left for work in the morning, around 5am, it was a ten-minute drive. When I returned home around 3pm, it was an hour and a half drive.

That's the primary reason I don't live in Southern California anymore.
