Well, historically American english is more conservative since immigrants like on the Mayflower came over and stayed on the continent tried to keep the language as the one they knew, while on the British isles language change was continuing to happen. Obviously language change happens, and probably because of this American english diverged on a different path and utilized different changes than the ones that occurred on the Isles.

I guess I worded it badly, but for britfags to complain about American english is moot, since of course the same changes wouldn't be able to happen an ocean apart. Canadian english retains the u like in colour because it's still a Commonwealth nation. What Webster was likely trying to do was re-standardize orthography to match American pronunciation. People in America say "realize" with a z pronuncation, so to write "realise" but say "realize" becomes confusing--look at the ways people fuck up language now, since text based communication has become so widespread, we're realizing that spelling and pronunciation are vastly different. Speech has changed a lot, but spelling has mostly stayed the same for centuries.
