Round 8 - April 22nd - April 29th

8th Round of the 2015 Challenge!

This round is an elimination round.

First full house of the challenge! Which makes it bittersweet that we must now say good-bye to
low standards !4wNmU.Xhok and Sayu !f1EBGzZP3A. Thank you for playing and don't hesitate to post along for the fun of it during the rest of the challenge!

Here's the list of those who made the top 7!

quaff !APT0oioJvY
Chalice !!a7Six4EVOK+
GHobo !HrKSCSXHa2
Spork !gVOKCoJgwg
Ciabatta !Wur2iJ/O4M

Regular rules (timestamps and identifiers) still apply.

Please read the voting guidelines below. This round will go until April 29th.

**

VOTING GUIDELINES

Voting follows an 'Iron Chef' style scoring system. This means you, the people of /ck/, will judge each entry individually instead of deciding on what you feel is the "best" dish.

Dishes are scored out of a total 20 points, based on 4 categories (worth a maximum of 5 points each); Presentation, Originality, Appeal and Challenge Goals. You may award 0's if you feel the contestant did not meet your expectations for a category.

-Presentation: The appearance of items on the plate; plating skills
-Originality: Creativity in composing the dish
-Appeal: How appetizing the food looks/whether or not the dish appeals to your personal taste as a voter
-Challenge Goals: How closely the entry followed the challenge goal(s)

The distinction between Presentation and Appeal: If someone submits an artfully arranged but burnt steak as an entry, it may score high in Presentation but low in Appeal.

The theme of Round Eight is...

"Food in Arts"!

Insipired by a book. A scene in a movie. A painting. A TV epidose. A videogame (cutscene, item, background, all are fine). Anything, but you have to tell us what the inspiration was.

While you're perfectly welcome to make a large spread of food, please make sure there is clearly a "main dish" because that is what people will be voting on.

Two persons will be eliminated after this round. The winner of the round will be winning the last of the round prizes! Next prize will be the final!

great idea for a round!

i have here the Schrute burger inspired by the Office's Dwight Schrute. more specifically the idea comes from the episode where Jim and Pam go to stay at the Schrute Farm Bed and Breakfast after it was revealed that Dwight had taken in interest in agro-tourism.

it's a lentil walnut beet patty topped with baby spinach and goat cheese.

It's a decent book, but Lucifer's Hammer was probably the best of Niven and Pournelle's collaborations. Plus, it had cannibalism in it, so it's an easy "cooking inspired by a book" choice. :-) Or you could do the dinner at the Savoy Hotel that the (arguably) main character talked about at one point.

The second book in the "Integral Trees" series is "The Smoke Ring". There are a few others that are sort of set in the same sci-fi "universe" but that aren't really relevant to them. I'm not sure if they did any more in the series itself.

BTW, their books are all over the web on ebook sites, if you don't want to go to the library.

Unfortunately I was to weak to make something real, so I decided to arrange most of the ingredients into a glass. Don't even have a name for this.

From the bottom up:
>cinnamon cookie crumbles mixed with dark chocolate powder
>cherry jelly
>panna cotta
>cherry jelly+caramel syrup
>panna cotta
>white chocolate ganache and a bit of caramel on the top, gonna be crunchy when it cools down

Just type "Adrien Henri Tanoux", first result is a page full of his work with a lot of naked high test harem qts. Won't let me post the link here for some spam reasons.

Here's an attempted recreation of Debussy's "Reflets dans l'eau" on a plate.

a piano piece, if you'd care to listen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hyiu7fBUk7o
very shimmery and lots of colourful chords; tried to translate that into a plate of food

>> No.6460486

>>6460474
ok whoops forgot the actual description lol

It's a rice-noodle soup, made in a home-made vegetable stock, then finished with various colourful items of garnish (rocket, cherry tomatoes, pepper, prosciutto) to give it the vibrant finish that the Debussy piece has.

Cool idea and you managed to mostly pull it off. Docked you a bit on appeal because I don't think the seaweed fits with the dish in terms of flavor. Still, definitely my favorite thing from this round so far.

Lentils, walnuts, and beets isn't an ideal combination to me because the first two are relatively bland. It seems like you would need something else to balance out the flavor of the beets. A sauce and additional topping would have bumped it up in presentation and appeal.

This was difficult to judge. It's sloppily done but that kind of works because it's based on a painting. I'm also assuming the glass was intentional because of the flowers. Unfortunately, the picture is pretty terrible and doesn't help the presentation or appeal.

Nice idea and I understand what you were going for after listening to the music. At the same time I don't know how all those flavors go together. It's kind of like a fresh salad on top of a soup.

I'm torn on the appeal score, because I truly despise lentils, but I'm trying to temper that based on how a "reasonable person" would feel about them.

It's an original idea and attractive presentation, but I'm not seeing a unity of ingredients here, and the transformation from sound to food just isn't clicking with me. I look at soup as being more of a melding of flavors, although I've eaten enough Japanese-restaurant ramen to know that there are different philosophies on that.
