My dad was visiting Europe a few years ago and had chest pains (he was 76 at the time). He went to some clinic, got checked out with state of the art equipment, asked how much it was, and, if I recall correctly, they were like "don't worry about it". I may be misremembering because that doesn't sound right, but it was something that should have cost like 10 grand, and it ended up being not a big deal at all.

Basically, if you're poor we expect you to die, and if you're not poor we expect you to spend at least 2/3 of your income on paying for overpriced procedures.

They have multiple part time jobs because if you're hiring low-skill low-wage employees who are easily replaced, why should you want to deal with employee benefits? Increasing education standards across society is good for the entire country. This is what right wingers fail to grasp. Yes, we still need bricklayers and toilet moppers, but we also need to recognize that we can't hang on to our position of dominance if we're both keeping educated immigrants out *and* keeping our own citizens undereducated because "fuck poor people". We can try to revive our tradition of brain-draining every other country on earth, which worked really well for most of the 20th century, or we can try to go at it alone and educate our own.
