Welcome to the 5th Round of the 2015 Challenge!

This round is an elimination round.

pon !g5GTSHLbXY has backed out of the competition, meaning only one person actually got eliminated last round...
We had quite a few people not posting last round so I went with the cummulative scores from the open rounds. So two people got lucky ;-). However, we must now say good-bye to MoarCowbells !!qd5P4UpU5Zi. Thank you for playing and don't hesitate to post along for the fun of it during the rest of the challenge!

Regular rules (timestamps and identifiers) still apply. Full rules and past rounds are on the blog : http://ckchallenge.blogspot.ca/

Please read the voting guidelines below. This round will go until April 7th.

**

VOTING GUIDELINES

Voting follows an 'Iron Chef' style scoring system. This means you, the people of /ck/, will judge each entry individually instead of deciding on what you feel is the "best" dish.

Dishes are scored out of a total 20 points, based on 4 categories (worth a maximum of 5 points each); Presentation, Originality, Appeal and Challenge Goals. You may award 0's if you feel the contestant did not meet your expectations for a category.

-Presentation: The appearance of items on the plate; plating skills
-Originality: Creativity in composing the dish
-Appeal: How appetizing the food looks/whether or not the dish appeals to your personal taste as a voter
-Challenge Goals: How closely the entry followed the challenge goal(s)

The distinction between Presentation and Appeal: If someone submits an artfully arranged but burnt steak as an entry, it may score high in Presentation but low in Appeal.

>> No.6377038

The theme of Round Five is...

/ck/ Potluck!

Your dish most be portable and shareable. What would you bring to a shared meal with all the other contestants?

While you're perfectly welcome to make a large spread of food, please make sure there is clearly a "main dish" because that is what people will be voting on.

Two persons will be eliminated after this round.

alrighty

2-3 chorizo, cured or raw is fine, sliced or diced
4-5 large waxy potatoes
1 medium-large white onion
about 300g chopped spring greens
10-12 eggs

you may parboil the potatoes cut into largish chunks if you wish. i did that this time but usually i just slice them thinly and cook them from raw.

put the chorizo in a non-stick or seasoned skillet with 50ml or so of water and render on low heat.

finely dice the onion and add it to the chorizo when rendered and thoroughly browned. add your potatoes, season with salt and toss to combine. cook over low heat til the potatoes are softened and just beginning to catch. add more oil if it stops sizzling, you want a layer of oil coating the pan.

i added lemon zest and extra smoked paprika as well as chilli but this is up to you.

blanch and shock your spring greens in salted water, then stir them into the cooked potato mixture.

beat eggs together in a large bowl and season. add hot potato mixture (don't worry about getting all of it out the pan, it's going back in) and toss to combine as well as briefly temper the eggs. check for seasoning finally then add back into pan and stir a little just to prevent large filmy curds forming at the bottom.

at this point you can either bake in the oven at 175C for around 20 minutes or cook it more traditionally like a tortilla, i used the oven in this case after scattering the top with finely chopped chives and a little toasted paprika. the dish is at its best when still a little gooey in the centre, it will firm up as it cools.

quantities might be a little off, depends on the size of your ingredients and pan of course.

make sure to be generous with salt, there's nothing worse than underseasoned potato and egg.

The challenge is pretty simple: something that you would be proud to bring to a party of your peers.
For a lot of Americans it would be fried chicken.... for you, it would be....________

>> No.6385205

>>6385170
A potluck is a shared meal. Everyone brings a dish for everyone else to share. It's great for ad-hoc friendly gathering (so the host doesn't have to feed the hordes), family get together (arrive at whatever time, add your plate to the table, eat what others brought). You always end up with tons of left-overs.

So the challenge is to make a dish you could bring with you to a gathering, for all those there to share.

There's lots of them in the midwest US especially... you can have one anywhere a group of people is gathering, it's just a buffet of different homecooked foods (sometimes a lot of casserole type dishes) that everyone serves themselves and eats together or while mingling. Sort of the white persons tapas.

Here we go, sorry if I've kept anyone waiting.

Made Eastern Asian style pork and coriander dumplings (with dipping sauce, of course), red braised chicken, and some nice stir fried sugar snap peas with garlic to go along with it. Worked out really nicely, and we ended up using the leftover sauce from the chicken as an alternative dip for the dumplings, which was fucking orgasmic. Very happy how it ended up.

It's not really much of a recipe to be honest, but here's a rough vertical(? What do you call it if it's just one image?). I just made a pint each of coconut and pandan jelly from some coconut milk and pandan extract, then layered them as they set.
