http://www.straitstimes.com/news/singapore/more-singapore-stories/story/most-diners-would-not-pay-tap-water-restaurant-straits-t

>About 85 percent, or close to 1,500 respondents, said they would not pay for tap water at a restaurant. Only 15 percent said otherwise.

>This is despite more dining establishments charging for tap water because of rising costs, such as having service crew on standby to refill the glasses, and to make up for the loss in drink sales.

>Around one in 10 restaurants now charge for water, at least twice the number from just two years ago. They typically charge between 30 cents and 80 cents.

If I ever see tap water charged, I will raise holy hell and it'll get taken off. Then I will never go back to that restaurant.

If it becomes a trend and every restaurant everywhere does this, I will either bring a bottle of water, or I will cease to eat out.

That's just ridiculous.

BOO-FUCKING-HOO

I don't give a fuck what you "lose" over the fact that I don't drink HFCS bubbles like most of your fat customers.

Never paying for water with my meals. And as was just mentioned above, if they ever charge for it here, I will be bringing my own bottle of water with me. And if they have a problem with it I will gladly shove the bottle of water up the person's ass.

Imagine if you were running a highly developed first world economy dominated by a certain ethnic group (let's call it "chinese") that got all of its water through the pipes in this picture, and those pipes worked at the discretion of a much larger neighboring third world country that was dominated by a different ethnic group (let's call them "malays") that resented your ethnic group for its success and politicized the existence of those pipes, and, more generally, trade and transport between your countries.

Let's suppose that the pipes were a constant source of worry for you and even little things like less dish washing could be considered helpful in reducing dependency on your larger, resentful neighbor.

Can you see how perhaps this situation wouldn't really be applicable to most other countries? Such as the Netherlands, for instance?

I work in Beijing and the food is pretty good.

However, I sometimes have some shit to do in smaller towns (2nd rate towns, Qingdao and such). Not only the food is shit but they also charge for tissue paper. So I always bring my own or simply try to avoid these places.

I think they're going to find themselves losing a lot more than drink sales.

>> No.6215452

>>6215417
So, this is about reducing dependency, not about restaurants making a profit? Since, you know, nobody here will stop drinking the water, they will just drink it at home instead of at the restaurant.

So with the dependency argument out, we're looking at costs. Water in Singapore costs 1.17 Singapore dollars per 1000L [1], water in the Netherlands costs between €0.84 and €1.66 [2] Assuming an exchange rate where 1 Singapore dollar is €0.65, this would make water in Singapore cheaper than in the Netherlands.

So, essentially, this doesn't seem to have anything to do with neither availability issues, which it does not solve, nor with price, which is higher in the Netherlands. So I don't really see your point...

You would've been in your right to refuse to pay. But you have to explicitly specify that you want tap water, and they tend to require a lot of confirmation before 'understanding' that desire.

However, if they bring you water in a bottle when you ask for tap water, you can just as well send it back as you could when, for instance, you'd ordered a steak and you're given ribs.

>>6215465
Using a toilet when you're not ordering anything is considered reasonable, since toilets are often cleaned multiple times throughout the day. However, there's often just a suggested tip.

This. When I went to Germany I found that they nickel and dime you for every conceivable thing that places in the US just give you for free. Pay a fee to use the bathroom, condiments cost extra, you need to explicitly ask for tap water or they'll give you expensive sparkling water, etc.

When the Founding Fathers called us the Land of the Free, they meant it literally

I liked Germany. They think tap water is gross, so I get that, that's why I just ordered beer, it's actually cheaper to do it that way. And restaurants and shit don't charge you to use the bathroom, but the bathrooms at the rest stops and train stations they charge you for, but I didn't mind that because it meant they were always really clean.

Plus you don't have to tip.
German restaurants are superior in literally every way to the ones in the US. At least in based Bavaria.

The difference is that those things are STANDARD in Germany, whereas in the US you have to really look for a decent restaurant. Even if a place is locally owned and operated there's a %90 chance they're using Kraft dressing. And I have NEVER seen a cucumber slice in the US that isn't the thickness of a fucking entire deck of cards.

Fuck you twice, I haven't been to an olive Garden in over a decade. The only time I go to a chain restaurant is when I have to go out to the shitty town where my mom lives. Sadly the Red Robin there is the best restaurant in town.
