One confounding factor is likely to be that people would seem more likely to choose that which is most familiar to them and on their use.

For example, in my area the primary use of avocado is to make guacamole. I've never seen anyone pick up and eat an avocado without somehow preparing it first. On the other hand, people around here do eat bananas as they are or sliced onto cereal. (For what it's worth, my only use for bananas is to make banana nut bread.)

Also the choice of words. For example, a watermelon is a melon. It's kind of like asking if you prefer beef or meat.
