Nothing terribly healthy, but there's toasted ravioli and chili mac/chili dogs. St. Louis, MO here also has some nice baby back ribs, which you'll want to hit up Pappy's Smokehouse if you can manage to visit (though get there before 3 PM or they might be out). And yes, the rumors are true, don't drive in East St. Louis if you swing by down here - just stick to the highway and ignore that part of town.

Depends. Which part of the midwest?

St. Louis: godawful crap to eat, you'll probably get raped and killed.
Nebraska: lots of CORN!!!!
Kansas: everything WHEAT!!!!!
Chicago: best pizza in the world, lots of gyros places, some stupid hot dog shacks but what the hell, Kuma's Corner, Reza's.

tl;dr: except for Chicago, it's a vast wasteland.

Mostly true if you're an idiot. If you know the area there are some good places to eat (plus the bad parts of town are pretty identifiable). Unfortunately there isn't much that's native, but the US kind of sucks for those purposes anyways.

Midwest foods people crow about that I found disgusting:
Chicago pizza
Skyline 3-Way
Italian beef sandwich

Midwest foods I found god-tier:
Whitefish from Northern Michigan
Goetta (Ohio)
Cheese from Holland Family Farm (Wisconsin)
Polish food from Hamtramck, MI
beer (many very good microbrews)
SE Asian food (hard to find, but excellent in some areas, like St Paul)
Soul food in St Louis

As mentioned before, Chicago has good restaurants. Elsewhere good restaurants can be found, but they're often absurdly pricey, and many that look like they ought to be good turn out to be lackluster.

People in the Midwest generally eat like crap, which shocks me, given the access they have to good meat and excellent produce (in season at Amish farms). You can find some great stuff, but you have to get the fuck away from the strip malls, the supermarkets and the chain restaurants that dominate the landscape.

Chicagoan here,

first off Chicago does have great pizza, both deep dish and thin crust. Seriously, thin crust here is so good, but tourists only think of Chicago as a deep dish place.

Also, gotta get yourself some meat in tube form. Hit up Hot Doug's if you can, but hot dog/sausage places are everywhere (some better than others) but you can get a fix wherever.

Also, Italian beef. Most people will point you to Portillo's. Portillo's is damn good, but imo lots of mom and pop places have better beef. But you should try Portillo's anyways.

For fast food, try Culver's. Thanks to Wisconsin for that.

As for Chicago style pizza, NY style (thin) is still more popular just about everywhere (probably even in Chicago). Also good pizza you can get literally in almost any major city in the world and especially in the US. Every city is going to have at least a handful of pizza places that make great pizza.

Midwest has custard and cheese curds which are both amazing and you can't get everywhere. Fried cheese curds are like godly mozzarella sticks. Custard is ice cream with eggs in so it has a consistency and flavor more similar to gelato.

Italian beef is delicious but you can get at least a decent Italian beef sandwich a lot of places.

Midwest has kickass microbrews but that's becoming true of almost every region of the states now.

Culver's is really good fast food and all over the midwest. Great burgers, fried cheese curds, custard, soup, etc.

St Louis is a crappy city in parts but it's also well known for having a number of great BBQ joints.

Chicago and Twin Cities (Minn/St Paul) both have a very large food scene with lots of great restaurants. From fancy to hole in the wall places with excellent food.

Used to live in Indiana for a couple years and my mom lives in Chicago now, so I'm up there a few times a year.

My favorite restaurant in Chicago is the Berghoff off of West Adams. Part of it is nostalgia, as it was both my grandfather and great-grandfather's favorite restaurant in Chicago when they used to live there in the 1930s and 1940s.

Everything they have is hearty as fuck. They bring out some really good pumpernickel rye bread when you sit down ever so slightly warm. They have a great beer selection and even do a few house brews that are good.

Portions are huge.

The restaurant itself is original from 1898 and it's beautiful. It's not dark, but it's a comfortable, old world dim. Lots of history around the restaurant.

Other than that, I'd suggest finding a Rally's along the way for a quick burger. They're called Checker's in other parts of the country, and I don't think I've ever seen one in Houston. Best fries I've ever had. Burgers, if my memory is clear, are reminiscent of Five Guys.

We went to the airshow at Oshkosh one year and on our way out we stopped by a place called the Machine Shed (there's apparently a few of them in the midwest, think originating from Iowa). It's like an even better version of Cracker Barrel. Highly recommended.

>> No.5565568

what part of the midwest negroe, we're kind of a big region

I'll agree with the guy who said runza, but that's mainly if you're in the great plains. they may also be called bierocks or pirozhki

if you're in eastern South Dakota, mainly Sioux Falls, you should check out Bob's Carry Out. it's a small diner that has some of the best diner food I've ever had. extremely well priced, so go with an empty stomach

something unique to southeastern South Dakota is chislic. it's basically just fried mutton kebabs, but there's something about them. sadly, many places just fry up cubed up steak and claim it's chislic, but it has to be mutton, and it shouldn't have a breading or marinade. Botski's in Sioux Falls has the real thing, other places in the city just serve cubed steak on toothpicks. rural areas like Freeman and Parker tend to be better for it, but I kind of doubt someone driving through would stop there.

What the fuck, people. Chicago pizza and "Midwest" pizza are totally different things. You can't use anything from the biggest city in the region to represent the region as a whole.

Happy-motherfucking-Joe's (especially taco pizza), Casey's General Store pizza, Quad-Cities style pizza (Harris, Frank's, Fat Boy's)... there's lots to try outside Chicago and is more relevant to the region in general.

As someone that's from Iowa and has been to Solly's dozens of times on trips to Milwaukee, I can understand why their burgers wouldn't be someone's cup of tea, even if they really liked butter. It's not a place I'd take someone if they were just in the mood for a burger, it's a place I'd take them if I said "ok, I want to show you a local specialty, it's not like anything you've had before, let's go."

Someone else mentioned Harris pizza, hell yeah. Strip-cut, finely ground fennel sausage under the cheese, thin tangy sauce, malty crust, mmm. It's about as Midwest as you get, really, next to Happy Joe's taco pizza.

I've nothing to say about food that hasn't been said but the Midwest has the best beer in the world.
No, I'm serious.
Bell's Two Hearted is the best IPA, better than Stone, better than Dogfishhead, it's just the best.
New Glarus has the best session Ales, they're untouchable in that department.
Then you have Founder's, Great Lakes Brewing Company, Three Floyds...

It's a beer lover's paradise, and west coast/east coast yuppies won't stop whining and admit that their cult of personality craft beers aren't number one.

But yeah, food? Good comfort food, don't expect anything outrageous or complex, St. Louis and Kansas City (both) have really great BBQ, Chicago has great food in general, as does the Madison, Minneapolis, Detroit, and West Michigan (Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo) areas. But most "quintessential" midwestern foods are simple, middle of the road, but nonetheless satisfying comfort style casseroles and hot dishes.

Good, someone already said it.

I live on the west coast now but I spent 22 years in Iowa. The Machine Shed was not only one of the single best places to eat around my hometown (which wasn't small), but also one of the most popular ones among out-of-state visitors. When I got married, my wife's family (who all live in Washington) came down for the ceremony and we had our post-wedding meal at the Machine Shed. Everyone at the table left absolutely stuffed and extremely happy. When we go back on occasion, we don't leave without stopping in again for a meal.

I know for a fact there's still one in Davenport, Iowa. Not sure where any other locations are since I only ever went to that one.

Moon Man and their fruit beers are absolutely top tier. I agree with your review of Spotted Cow, it's okay, nothing amazing. No idea why it became the most popular New Glarus beer. Probably just because it's closest to an adjunct lager.

I've heard good things about Moon Man. I'll have to try that out whenever I decide to take a trip up north. Or convince my friend who often does go to WI to stop buying cases of Spotted Cow and get other stuff instead.

>his face when I told him Spotted Cow was just ok, and there were a lot of better beers out there

He got so damn defensive. He doesn't even really drink craft beer. He was just told SC was really good, so he started drinking it and assumed that's what a really good beer is.

At least he's trying to branch out into the world of good beers though. Some plebs never even take that step.

Spotted Cow is just their flagship beer so everyone knows of it. It's not bad but I'm not really a fan. Some of their lesser known beers, seasonals, and limited run beers (has the foil red top and only in 4 packs) are fucking amazing. Coffee Stout is one of the best of its kind. I lived in Austin, a city you mentioned, for 12 years. Sure, the scenes you'd like to be a part of exist in places like that. They're not just going to welcome you with open arms, though; it doesn't work like that. You don't just start hanging out with groups of brilliant, cutting edge artists, musicians, and comedians; not unless you have money you can throw around or you are equally as precocious as they.

This brings me to my next point: NY, Chicago, SF, LA, even Austin - you need money to be able to live the life you obviously imagine. Unless you are pretty damn well-off, you'll be hanging out with the same assholes, except this time you'll be in a disgusting, dirty city with skyrocketing crime rates (yes, NYC is pretty safe right now.)

I get that the Midwest is a depressing place, especially small towns. It definitely is. Also, if you want to take some meat home. Omaha Steaks(its a brand that sells more than just steaks) are pretty good. Omaha Steak's burgers are pretty great if you want some pre formed burgers, the steaks themselves are what you would expect, but you get them better than what you would at the supermarket.

Back to the old market (funny story I'm at a coffee shop there as we speak) its your typical tourist trap/place where locals go to celebrate special occasions.

If you want to find some hole in the wall shit, go to South Omaha, which are the hispanic neighborhoods. I recommend a place called El Aguila. There is also a "gourmet" burger place across the street called Burger Lust.

Another up and coming place in omaha is a place called Dundee. Haven't explored it much.

Lastly, Jones Brothers Cupcakes is Gourmet Cupcakes. It includes all the decadent things you would expect from a shop that specializes in Cupcakes. Near that is Spirit World, which sells specialty liquor.

Historically, the "midwest" is the great lakes states, because of the westward expansion and the railroad. You can slide that definition all you like, but between Ohio and the rockies, there's all the corn fields you could ever want, the piss water they call beer, and bland food to make lots of landwhales.

I've lived all over the US and have been to 43 states, so far. The west is best, Maynard.

we'll be happy to have you. personally I'd recommend stopping in my current town grand rapids, mi as we have some of the best micro breweries in the USA, and they all have amazing food as well. while you're in Michigan head up to the beautiful north and go on a winery tour on the banks of lake Michigan. little known fact, since Michigan is all peninsulas, we actually have the most coastline of any state in America, except for Alaska! don't worry, we don't let it get to our heads though.

heck, head on over to Detroit to see what a coney dog was meant to taste like or get some middle Eastern food from the area that contains more Arabs than any place in the world, save for the actual middle East. don't be afraid to try some faygo "pop". it's not just for juggalos you know. easily any Michigander's favorite soda (except for maybe Vernor's ginger ale). we also have better maid potato chips which are delicious.

Belgium makes really good beer, not as good as the top american brewers anymore but still really good. Restrictive, like the reinheitsgebot? You should taste more Belgians. Craft beers in America are fairly new and they just don't have it down like breweries such of the abbeys of Belgium who have been doing it the same way for hundreds of years.
