I grew up in the mid-west united states and was always disgusted by the culinary abominations that was people passed off as cooking.

Anyways, gross regional food thread.

I grew up in the same area.

I don't really have a problem with greasy, gut-busting garbage comfort food. My problem is with people's near-inability to prepare and cook that food.

Most people I know that have never left the Midwest clamor on-and-on about "local/quality/mom's cooking/etc." food, but refuse to better their eating experience. Cheese is always Kraft, steaks are cooked down to shoe leather, and any dish thicker than a thin crust pizza is burnt on the outside and practically uncooked on the inside, meat dishes are cooked unchecked for hours on end until they're bone dry.

You could probably do something not awful if you made a sweet, cakey bread specially and put some flavour through the butter and found some sprinkles that aren't just sugar crystals but at that point you might as well just make a cake.

Hull in England, we're in the golden zone for fried Fish and Chips.

One local specialites is the "Pattie", which is basically a fishcake but without the fish, so basically battered soft potato and various herbs, invented due to fish shortages after the Cod War with Iceland. Also sold as a "Pattie Buttie" in a bap/breadcake/breadknob/whatever you want to call it.

Chip Spice is another famous one. It's only really paprika and salt with a few other bits, but go to any takeaway of any kind in Hull and they will slather it all over your meal, it's just gorgeous, no need for mayo or tomato sauce. The bizarre thing is you simply do not get it anywhere else, it's quite jarring after a night out somewhere else to have to eat your chips with either nothing or boring salt.

Did you never walk into a greek immigrant owned mom and pop diner? Did you avoid german restaurants? Are you saying culver burgers are dried out? Chick Fil A doesn't have a good chicken sandwich? A chicago hot dog isn't your thing? What about a bratwurst or delicious pizza, or basically anything with wisconsin cheese. Or how about homemade ice cream craft places with local berry harvests, about 3 in every town.
