Ausfag here, about to be in New York for a week. Looking for food recommendations.

Particularly tips on good spots for pizza and other iconic New York food.

I was just in NYC last week for my birthday

There's a really neat candy shop called It'Sugar

There's a really fantastic japanese tea house called Ippodo Tea, they sell great drinks, loose leaves, and serve lunch (it was mostly sushi from what I read, but I didn't eat there)

Lombardi's Pizza (the "historic" 1st pizzeria ever) was fucking great. One of the best pizzas I've had in my life, pretty expensive though.

Some street venders actually some some really dope food, be on the look out and try some things from them.

Hope I helped even a little bit.

I'll let others give recommendations for the obvious stuff, like Katz's deli, pizza joints, Russ and Daughters and whatnot.

For some real street level New York that most tourists would miss:

Punjabi - 114 E1st St. Classic NYC cabbie joint. Two curries over rice for $3.50. Vegetarian. Food is simple, good, spicy. Open 24hrs.

Chinatown: Walk into any joint with ducks hanging in the window. Order duck over rice. Be sure to ask for green sauce. If you're still hungry after that pick a random Chinese bakery and get a roast pork bun (the baked kind).

Russ and Daughters: 179 E. Houston St. Overpay for a bagel and smoked fish sandwich and see a piece of history.

The Essex St Market: 120 Essex St. Take a look at a Laguardia era public market built to get the pushcarts off the streets. Today it's a mix of low rent groceries and fancy food stalls.

El Casyliio de Jagua: 114 Rivington St. Time was when most of the lunch counters were Puerto Rican. Then they were Dominican. Let the Dominicans here make you a huge Cuban sandwich, have a beer and drop about $10. Pretend it's 1988.

Also:
Some folks will try to tell you a felafel at Mamoun's (119 Macdougal St) is amazing, but it's really just a good delivery system for their god-tier hot sauce, which will hurt you.

>> No.5530315

Hey there AUS bro, I did a pizza centered tour of NYC a few years ago. Hit all the great spots. Here are some of the best, of the best.

Ray's on Prince St - There are like 1000 Ray's. This is good, cheap, standard NY pizza

Patsy's in Harlem - Wouldnt think to find god tier pies in darky land, but these were some of the cities best

Grimaldi's in Brooklyn - Near the bridge, fucking fantastic

Di Fara Pizza - in Brooklyn, in the Midwood area, Jew town. Been called the cities best by Anthony Bourdain, Zagat, and the New York Times. Wasn't my favorite (Patsy's or Grimaldi's probably was), but it was still fantastic.

Skip Lombardi's, and skip Totonnos in Coney Island.

NOT PIZZA RELATED BUT PLZ OP, check out Katz's Deli in Manhatten, Lower East Side, and get a pastrami sandwich. Best sandwich in the world. I think about it all the time.

Hope you enjoy your trip, its a hell of a city.

It's fucking huge, and the pastrami is excellent. I don't know what you mean by plain. The sandwich is bread and meat - that's all it's supposed to be - Pastrami on rye. If you want mustard it's on the table.

As for the price, it's a tourist joint, so what do you expect? You can easily drop that much in Times Square for something not half as satisfying.

I didn't suggest anything else because literally any other sandwich would be a better deal than $20 for a pile of meat between two slices of bread. I can get a better pastrami sandwich at a small random deli in Jersey than Katz can make.

Agreed. But as far as tourist traps go it's one of the few worth seeing. I live here, and I've been once. Never felt the need to go there again. But it's not something a tourist would want to miss, if they have any interest at all in seeing it. Like Totonno's in Coney Island it's the real deal, even if it's not the best.

When I want a killer meat sandwich I'll go to Hometown Bar-B-Que in Red Hook. But I wouldn't send a tourist to fucking Red Hook.Unless that tourist lived in Manhattan.

The great thing about food in the U.S. is the extreme variety. We take food from all over the world. It's not always authentic but honestly most of the time it tastes way better.

So, try everything. Especially in NYC you'll have access to foods that you'll NEVER see in Austrailia. Take advantage of the variety, try out a ton of stuff, just whatever looks good. If you only eat 'iconic' food like hotdogs and pizza you'll leave disappointed, trust me.

Pizza in New York is massively disappointing
I've had significantly better New York Pizza outside of New York than when I was actually there.

Of all the highly recommended pizza places I tried, the pizza was bland, cheap, and unremarkable.
The 3 New York pizza places I regularly go to in my city in California are so much fucking better in terms of the ingredients they use and the flavors.

Fuck New York. Everything there is so crowded, expensive and overrated. Almost every dish that's known for being invented in New York can be had outside of the crowded shithole, and odds are it will be far tastier too.

Wow. I lived in NYC for two years and that is the worst possible place I've ever been to give that advice.

Manhattan is so gentrified and tourist ridden that it's literally impossible to just walk down the street and find something worth trying.

Every other place is either going to go out of business in a month or two, is overpriced shit that's going to go out of business in a few months, is over priced tourist shit, is over priced "authentic" Greek diner shit, etc, etc...

Unless you don't have to think about money, eating out in Manhattan is pretty fucking stupid...

What does OP like? I am most familiar with the union square area so that's where a lot of my suggestions will be from.

Mexican- Hotel Tortuga. 14th St and 3rd Ave. A really small place but I haven't had anything that I didn't like from there.

Ramen- You have to eat ramen if you haven't had it before. My favorite place is Takumi, it's right at Washington Square Park. You can't go wrong exploring St. Mark's Place though, there are good noodle and sushi places there. Also, Spot is there. It's dessert food, and expensive, but fucking delicious. The Golden Toast physically aroused me.

Waffles- Wafels and Dinges. There are food trucks around but they have a small venue near Herald Square. They post specials on their twitter every day, if you do it (like, do jumping jacks while you order or something like that) then they'll give you a free topping. I love this food.

Cheese- Murray's. Look it up. It's right near Peanut Butter and Company too, so you can get a grilled cheese from Murray's and a PBJ from PB&Co.

Burgers-Shake Shack, hands down. If you want to eat a good burger then you will eat at Shake Shack.

Dessert- Besides Spot, there's Serendipity 3. They have "frozen hot chocolate" and the world's most expensive sundae. If I had to choose between the two then I would choose Spot, but either place is good. Spot is more asiany and Serendipity 3 is more artsy, I would say.

I can't think of much else at the moment, but eating in NYC is such a blast. You should really just explore and see what you find. Since it's so tourist trap it attracts good chefs, so the quality (and price, unfortunately) go up. That's how I see it at least.

Have fun on your trip! And do try to get beyond Times Square and the like, visit the Highline or something that isn't as obvious and super touristy. Explore!

Hotel Tortuga is okay, except for that one time I ordered tacos via delivery. The tortilla was cold and wet. It was depressing.

OP: You're Australian so you must have no idea what real Mexican food is like. If you're interested in trying some unpretentious Mexican food for commoners, go to Bushwick in Brooklyn or Corona in Queens. But you probably won't. They're far from the center of the city and you'll probably be scared.

If you want street food I would highly suggest you skip the hot dogs and pretzels and instead buy the street food that New Yorkers actually buy nowadays. Go to a halal cart and order chicken or lamb over rice, with white sauce and hot sauce. Not all halal carts are created equally, so good luck. People claim Halal Guys in Midtown is "the best" but I've never actually tried them, so I can't confirm that. I suspect it's fueled by hype from tourists who don't realize there are 10,000 other halal carts in this city.

I'm sad that you're staying mainly in Midtown because Midtown has boring overpriced food served in uninspired restaurants, but such is the life of tourists in this city I guess. I think the neighborhood that wins for best food variety is hands down the East Village, so consider going there. The East Village also has the highest density of bars in the country.

P.S. there is a colony of Australians centered around Nolita in Manhattan, if you care. Lamingtons and vegemite oi oi oi.

If ramen is of interest one of the best is Ippudo (65 4th Ave, East Village). There's often a little wait for a table, but it's worth it.

As far as Mexican goes, real Mexican is kind of hard to come by outside of Mexican neighborhoods in northern Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

Taqueria LES (189 Orchard St) does great LA style tacos, and Brooklyn Taco in the Essex Street Market (120 Essex St) does a slightly precious (but still fukken good) take on some classics.

If OP is really curious about Mexican food he can get a taste of Puebla style for a 25 min subway ride from midtown. Take the N or D train Brooklyn bound, and get off at 36th St in Brooklyn. Walk one block up the hill, and make a right on 5th Ave. That puts you in striking distance of Tacos El Bronco Mobil and Tortas Don Pepe. You'll also be just a few blocks from Tacos Matamoros. After that walk up into the park, check out the panoramic view of the harbor, the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan. Walk back to 36th St and take the train back to midtown. The whole trip will take an hour and a half, two hours max, and give bragging rights of having had Mexican in a real Mexican neighborhood in Brooklyn. Plus you get two trips across the Manhattan Bridge, giving you sweeping East River views along the way.

Na just fucked me up because my regular diet is mostly fruit, veggies and some meat but I was on holiday so I didn't give a shit. Was just a bit weird ordering food there, it felt like I was taking part in some sort of experiment.

Dont listen to these guys 53rd and 6th is the most overrated halal stand in the universe. They give you the most dry chicken/lamb you have ever seen. They let you put however much white/bbq sauce you want just because they know they have 0 taste otherwise. 90% of every halal stand actually gives you juicy chunks of meat (no homo) and they just give you the Milimeter shreds of it.

Seriously just try out a bunch of different halal stands and while there might be 1 shit one that adds like cinnamon to their rice for no reason youll find a bunch of better ones.

Halal guys one positive is portions. You will barely finish cause they give you so fucking much.

2nd Ave Deli is better than Eisenberg and Katz

Eisenberg's was too dry and Katz was meat on bread.

Have to agree. Very few places in the city are worth your time now. (Btw, "the city" is what we call Manhattan. It doesn't refer to the whole of New York City, which also includes the Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.) If you're willing to cross any of the bridges into the outer boroughs, you'll find amazing food of all kinds. Brooklyn (particularly south Brooklyn) is great if you want quality, authentic Jewish, Russian, Chinese and Italian cuisine (any $14 pizza you get here will be 34273498374 times better than any $30 pizza you buy in Manhattan). Queens is excellent for Indian, Korean and Hispanic food, among many other types of food too.

The outer boroughs have really amazing, authentic cuisines from around the world, but if you like whitewashed, tailored-to-tourists type of stuff, you'll be okay with what's in Manhattan. However, of the many places in the city mentioned by others in this thread, the only ones I can really agree with being good are:
>Go Go Curry (Japanese curry, it's pretty tasty)
>Gray's Papaya (hot dogssssss)
>Shake Shack (go at night when the line is shorter)

Other places I recommend:
>Any bagel shop with high food traffic that specifically specializes in bagels. The bagels will probably be just average if they're not in Brooklyn, but all of these places have great flavored cream cheeses.
>Gregory's Coffee. Great tea selection (with quality teas) if you're not into coffee. 50% off pastries after 7pm.

Just do your research on Yelp and don't go into any place with under 4 stars. Don't pussy out and go to McDicks, Starbucks or anyplace familiar either. New York is the food capital of the world, go on an adventure.

2 Bros is not bad for $1 but I still wouldn't call them great pizza. Hits the spot so well when you need something greasy though. Also I hate those fucking "homeless" crusties who sit outside.

I agree. Don't go to 53rd and 6th, it's not worth the wait.
