5526748 No.5526748 [Reply] [Original]

I've been reading about foods that Americans eat that people from other countries find distasteful, and I wonder about the veracity of some of the claims, and generally what people really eat and dont eat in different places. here is a list of foods that I can confirm are eaten regularly by many Americans but are claimed to be thought disgusting in other parts of the world:

Chili cheese dogs
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
Pumpkin pie
Spam
Red velvet cake
Biscuits and gravy
Bacon and eggs
Grits
Mayonaise
Corn Dogs
Bologna
Smores
Ranch dressing

Now please, what are your thoughts on this? If you are not from the U.S. how do you feel about any of these foods? Are there disgusting foods that you have heard that Americans eat frequently that aren't on the list? Oh and if you reply please state the country you are from.

IMHO:

Chili cheese dogs: not disgusting, just fat.
Peanut butter + jelly sammich: agreed.
Pumpkin pie: nope.
Spam: it's like kibble for humans, it's supposed to be disgusting.
Red velvet cake: no idea on what this is.
Biscuits and gravy: ew. Kinda disgusting.
Grits: nope.
Mayonnaise: ART THOU MAD? Mayo is one of the best inventions after the sliced bread! Specially if homemade in a nice potato salad.
Corn dogs: not disgusting.
Bologna: nope.
Smores: no idea.
Ranch dressing: it isn't disgusting, but using it every fucking where is.
Bacon and eggs: I used to think that way, until I tasted American bacon. It's mild, almost ham-like. It combos well with eggs.

Britfag, our cuisine is pretty similar these days but I don't have anything better to do

Chilli cheese dogs: never had one, chili cheese fries are nice but way too rich to be a side for a burger, and you have to eat them before it starts to coagulate
Peanut butter and jelly: I've made one in england and tried one with the proper grape jelly in america, disgusting both times, I don't get how such a high fat + sugar sandwich is a standard lunchbox ingredient
Pumpkin pie: very nice if made properly and served with ice cream
Biscuits and gravy: I had this at a diner in america, the biscuits were nice but the gravy was underwhelming, might have been the place, either way its a nice combo
Grits: what is this again?
Bologna: basically tastes the same as the really cheap processed ham slices here, 0/10
Smores: very nice, much better than roasting marshmallows alone
Ranch: shamefully, I like it quite a lot, I don't think I would use it on pizza though

Anything I didn't mention I either haven't tried or is very common in the UK as well.

New Zealand here

Chili cheese dogs: not a fan but agree with Australia: carnivals and festivals.
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches: my brothers lived off of them. It's certainly not uncommon.
Pumpkin pie: I've made this once. Was.... Very different. Kind of tasty.
Spam: I think it's awful, but mum loves taking it camping.
Red velvet cake: red food colouring in chocolate cake.
Biscuits and gravy: biscuits here are cookies. Not sure why you'd dip biscuits in gravy...
Bacon and eggs: stereotypical breakfast food, add toast, hash browns and tomato sauce.
Grits: what?
Mayonaise: we use this for everything in the restaurant I work in. But we add things like; garlic/capsicum/chipotle etc to make other sauces.
Corn Dogs: I've had these once. I always imagined them to be carnival food. Not family snacks.
Bologna: ....probably something we eat here but a different name.
Smores: campfire food. Not uncommon and really tasty.
Ranch dressing: I've only ever used this for sauce on ranch slaw to go with the ribs at the restaurant.

I guess I'm in the minority in not liking peanut butter and jelly.
I don't think it's too sweet for breakfast or a snack, but I would never give my kid jam on toast or a jam sandwich for lunch, so peanut butter and jelly is just really unhealthy, especially considering the sandwich is supposed to be the staple of lunch.

I also just think it's a nasty combination, I've tried it with English strawberry jaw and another time with American grape jelly and both times I couldn't finish it.

Sweet potato casseroles are most often served at Thanksgiving feasts, it's not a common thing to have (at least in my family). It's just something decadent served alongside the main meal which is usually all savory (unless if there's cranberry jelly, which does oddly more strongly resemble gelatin than it does jam). My aunt usually prepares the sweet potatoes with some brown sugar, vanilla, and pecans rather than marshmallows. It just ends up tasting about as sweet as any dessert and acts as a nice foil to the rest of the plateful while matching the general texture/color scheme.

And I think biscuits are pretty much savory, round scones? Not sure how different the textures are but they look more or less the same.

Not all American peanut butter is sweet, and even if it is, the jam's main purpose (at least in my opinion, there are 300 million other people here who might very well disagree) is that it's wet so it makes the sandwich easier to eat.

>Those are not biscuits and roux filled with bits of sad-looking grey meat is not gravy.

First of all, there's also cream or milk in the gravy. And second, get over the fact that we call things differently, that's no reason to hate it.

>Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
Never, everyone knows peanut butter and pickle sandwiches are the GOAT peanut butter sandwiches! :) (only eat those maybe once or twice a month)
>Pumpkin pie
Why would anyone have a problem with pumpkin pie? It's no different than any other custard pie from any other country. I know for a fact that many euro countries make custard desserts, do they consider themselves disgusting? Anyway, pumpkin pie is mainly only eaten during the winter holidays.
>Spam
Pan fried Spam is delicious, and anyone who says it's not is a liar. That said, I only eat maybe a couple times a year, because heavily salted meats aren't exactly great for you.
>Red velvet cake
This is a specialty cake, no one eats this all the time. Also, real red velvet cake (the kind colored with beets and made with cocoa) is spectacular.

>Bacon and eggs
No one thinks bacon and eggs are disgusting, OP. You are sticking your own child-like opinions in there. That's just stupid.
>Grits
So, this is just a "hate on southern food" thread? Plain grits aren't great, but baked garlic cheese grits or shrimp and grits are fantastic. Again, this is just an occasional food.

it's the concept of pouring it on an unfilled baked good that grosses people out i think. i'm a britfag and when i first heard of it it was while watching ed edd and eddy and i thought it was a joke - as i'm sure you're aware, biscuits to us are cookies to you. when i found out it actually referred to scones i was still like wut.

Some people like sausage gravy, but anyone with taste makes bacon gravy. Sausage gravy does have a distateful texture. Bacon is preferable both in taste and texture, because instead of mixing meat into the gravy and muddling it up, the crisp chopped bacon is crumbled over the top. You do use bacon fat to make the gravy, though, so the gravy has a bacon flavor regardless. Anyway, that's why I say the gravy is never lumpy. Sausage gravy seems to be something popular in the deep south, while bacon gravy is the standard in other parts.

LOL, well, I can see how it would seem like that. It's good though. It's a dish that has it's roots in poor people food from the 1800s (the origin is probably even earlier) when people couldn't let any bit of food go to waste. But, like I say, I much prefer bacon gravy to sausage gravy. If I want sausage with breakfast, I'll just have sausage links.

>> No.5527456

Sausage gravy is delicious. And not all that weird if you think about it. Bechamel sauce is popular. Now imagine making a bechamel with the fat that comes off the kind of meats a short order cook is lkikely to have lying around: breakfast sausage, hamburger or bacon. That's the gravy.

The biscuits are a Southern thing. In some parts of the South biscuits are the table bread. It's not too hard to see how the two things came together.

Like much Southern food it's comically heavy, but let's not forget this is a mostly rural culture, where big breakfasts were a way of life. And the memory of not being able to get meat after the Civil War still hangs over the culture - if you're not eating meal at every meal it's because you're too poor to afford it.

It's not supposed to be, but you can blame the changes in the way they make cocoa on that. Vinegar and buttermilk, acids, work on the cocoa to produce a natural red color. Later recipes would enhance it with beetroot or red food coloring. Cocoa is now processed to have lower acidity to begin with, so the color is muted without adding the dyes.

New Zealander here.

Chili cheese dogs- Like other Australians/New Zealanders have said, a carnival or festival food.
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches- The name puts a lot of people off (the ol' jam/jelly/preserve issue), but I love them. Probably have a couple a month. Grilled is even better.
Pumpkin pie- I love pumpkin pie, but most people here see things like pumpkin and sweet potato as purely savory vegetables.
Spam- I've only really had it as part of spam musubi, so I'm not sure if that counts. Just tasted like super salty meat-ish stuff. Plus it's pretty expensive here too.
Red velvet cake- Has recently become really popular. It's just red chocolate cake to me.
Biscuits and gravy- The whole biscuit/scone thing confuses me- I'm not too keen on the idea of this, but I'd be willing to try it.
Bacon and eggs- Not weird at all. A common breakfast food.
Grits- Just seems like a corn porridge to me.
Mayonaise- Used often in salads.
Corn Dogs- Essentially what we call 'hot dogs' in New Zealand (The term American hot dogs is used for the bun hot dogs).
Bologna- Lunch meat. Cheap for kid's sandwiches.
Smores- Often eaten whilst camping or at bonfires/couchfires.
Ranch dressing- I'm really not a fan of dressing at all, but there's some in our fridge.

Really, none of these are gross at all to me.

As far as scones go I have only ever had them as crunch and sweet, not sure if they range any different anywhere else because I'm in Texas. The biscuits for biscuits and gravy are soft, depending on how you like them you can either get flaky or homestyle. They usually get served with gravy but the jelly is nice occasionally. If you prefer sweeter biscuits you can always have chocolate gravy instead and that is never bad as long as you know what the hell you're doing.

Okay, so l've lived a good portion of my life in the south east and the other half of it in the north east portion of the US.

Biscuits are fluffy, light, buttery, and should have a slight crispness to the outside portion. Only sweet due to additions of honey or jams.

Scones are dense, more likely to have things baked in, almost always sweet, and if too thin or overcooked become crunchy like a cookie.

Cookies are a dessert, and should not be recommended for breakfast. Can be chewy, crunchy, brittle, doughy, simple, complex, and are so easy to make differently just by adding more or less of any one of the simple ingredients.

Biscotti are the same thing as cantuccini, for the "authentic" italians. Twice baked cookie, usually flavored with almonds and served with coffee. Can be filled with other things/ dipped in chocolate.

Holy shit. Scones are really fluffy inside, should rise a lot and have a very delicate interior texture. Some recipes call for soda water (or even lemonade, the lemonade flavour doesn't come through though) and I find these usually turn out the best. Can be served with sweet preserves and cream, or butter and savoury preserves, can also be topped with cheese before going into the oven or onto the griddle.

Smores is chocolate and marshmallow melted between wheat crackers that have been heavily sweetened with honey.

Ranch dressing is like buttermilk dressing with some herbs.

Chili is most often beans, ground beef, and tomato sauce with a lot of spice in it. It isn't anything like the tomato sauce you'd be used to, much much spicier.
