So apparently I have shit taste in beer according to all the experts I talked to and read about online. My two favourites are

1. Kootenay True Ale (I'm from BC Canada so this is a local beer which is nice)

2. Parallel 49 Sour Cherry Berlinerweisse (Seasonal beer for the summer time)

Whenever I go in and ask at any store for the sour cherry beer they say "Oh why would you want that it tastes terrible" and I was curious so I checked online and found people rating it a 1-2 out of 20. Now I'm not a huge alcohol person and don't party or drink to get drunk. I enjoy the mild taste of a Lager and I really enjoy sour tasting food/fruits.

What do most people look for in a beer and what are your favorites for different occasions (thirst quencher on a hot day, with a meal, with dessert, etc....) and can anybody recommend me another beer based on my 2 favorites? I prefer Lager but a lot of them taste the same and I am not a fan of "Hoppy" tasting beer.

How common is it for Americans to use the setup in pic related for their bathrooms?

I went to visit some relatives in Iowa, and got to stay in their house. They lived in a pretty small city, and had to do this because of something that had to do with their city sewage treatment.

Essentially, you had to throw the used TP in a separate bin, and then also scoop the turds back up and put them in yet another separate bin.

I've experienced the TP thing in hotels in Cyprus, Spain and Greece, but the scoop thing came as a complete shock and I thought they were joking.

Could some American shed some light on this? How prevalent is it?

in fact, don't listen to anyone who shits on beer you like. If you like it, that's all that matters. As long as it doesn't have "light" in the name, it's beer, and it will get you drunk, that's what matters

...and even THEN, Keystone Light is not a bad beer

There's nothing wrong with liking Berlinerweisses. The Lil' Red however, was a complete fucking mess of a beer. They fucked up fermentation so bad on that one. As far as I remember they skipped using brettanomyces entirely and just went with lactobacillus and some s.cerevisiae. When you ferment with lacto but not brett you have nothing to metabolize and change the shitty chlorine/fatty awful acids that are a byproduct of the lactobacillus.

Graham With, their head brewer, didn't even want to release it but was compelled to by the higher ups. Shit was fucking awful but I can't fault you for not tasting all the off flavours in it if you regularly drink Kootenay. If you're in Van, head over to Brewery Creek up on Main. They know their shit and can help you out.

been craving a good wheat beer or stout (too opposite spectrums i know)

know what i cant stand?? the IPA crowd (dont get me wrong I like IPA) who unless its overloaded with hops does they think its good beer. enough with the hops, already, to every microbrewer, its too much effing hops.

sigh, so many good beers out there... im thirsty as hell now

>> No.5528768

Aren't berliner weisse generally supposed to be fermented with just lacto and saccharomyces? I've only talked to a few people about them, a couple homebrewers and one pro brewer, but I don't think anyone mentioned using brett. I think they all did a sour mash and just saccharomyces in the fermenter. I tried making one with adding lacto in the fermenter, but IDK, it tasted like lemon juice heh.

>> No.5528874

>>5528768
Doing a sour mash is almost entirely required, and by doing so you're going to attract wild yeast that can help eat at those awful acids that produce chemical/cheesy/shit flavours. Most lacto cultures that you can pick up from Wyeast and WhiteLabs all have brett added anyway.

Again, from what I can remember Parallel 49 used a pure Lacto culture and didn't sour mash. I'm sure conditioning time is also a huge factor as well, as I think they were rushed to get it out quickly. In any case the beer was fucking awful if you had any semblance of a palate.

I haven't tried many berliner weisse, but the one I had most recently (from 'Arizona Wilderness' brewing, near me) had a pretty distinct Parmesan cheese flavor to it, so maybe that's what you're talking about. I actually liked it, though.
