What are some nice, affordable absinthes to try for a beginner? I'm looking for pleasant tasting, sort of authentic stuff, not shitty eastern European gimmick shit.

well, anon

Where do you live? Depending on your location it could be a bitch to get certain styles of absinthe.

Also, absinthe in general is HARSH as fuck, which is why people only rinse glasses with it (i.e. Sazeracs), dilute it with water to drink, do the suger-spoon method, etc.

And that is due to its very high proof.

Pernod Absinthe isn't the highest proof absinthe, and is also a great starting point.

I think it runs for 70ish bucks a bottle

Absinthe, even the good kinds, are supposed to taste awful as hell. I would recommend against even trying the stuff because it's costly and tastes like crap.

I used to watch a show called Three Sheets where this dude just goes around the world drinking. He did an episode on absinthe and literally every method for consuming it is just loading it up with sugar to get by the horrible taste.

i've got a bottle and i've been trying to come up with cocktails because its awful on its own

so far i haven't had any luck

you both are retarded. Good absinthe is fucking balling. Dilute it with water to get the full taste without burning your tastebuds.

Also, in terms of cocktails, there are a fucking load.

You can basically replace it as a less sweet/high proof green chartruse

You can get a small sample-size of St. George's, if you want a fine example of absinthe, without spending too much just to try it.

Netherlands. I can get Pernod Absinthe (68% abv) for 32 euros. Sounds good.

I've already had some sort of absinthe once and I liked it. I also like ouzo/pastis/raki etc, so I'm sure I'll like absinthe in general. I'm just wondering which brands to proceed with.

but in reality, absinthe tastes like shit unless you're going to spend $100 a bottle. even if you dilute it.

It's supposed to be diluted.

Do you also consider other anise flavoured drinks to taste like shit, by the way?
