right now my mom has moldy strawberries
she doesn't even eat strawberries

i feel you bros. just yesterday i told my mother in law that her strawberries in the fridge for 2 weeks are still molding and if i could finally throw them away. i had to show it to her and she took one out to smell it (it was fucking white, okay? covered in mold) and said to throw them out but if i saw a good one to keep it.

she did not even once eat them. fucking 'murica.

Oh man, dat feel

>My buys unripe/out of season shit literally all the time
>Lets fruits go to waste, lets veggies waste too
>(Personal worst) When I buy ingredients like peppers or onions or what have you, instead of keeping them in the fridge in spots I can see (like right up front where I leave them) she moves them to places like the shitty drawers or the back of the fridge
>Sometimes forget where my shit is or if I even bought it because this happens to much
>That smell when I open the shitty drawers which I especially never use and find moldy "dead" foods
>She more than likely is getting alzheimers because she never remembers not to fucking do it anytime I confront her

I wish I could save up enough money to move out, but things just keep coming up...

It's not about being poor, it's understanding that milk doesn't suddenly turn to poison because of an arbitrary date. It can be good for a few days after. Hell, it can even go bad before the sell by date.

>> No.5512928

>>5512918
Is there some agreed upon time interval after that date that it's still ok like with milk/eggs/yogurt, or should you just rely on the smell and how it looks? Because with eggs I don't know how you would tell

When people do this with canned goods it drives me crazy. It's fucking canned, if it's still sealed properly then it's still good.

Don't go by expiry dates, go by smell. It can be annoying if you're purchasing something you don't intend to use quickly so you want to know if it's worth buying but otherwise definitely smell is the best options. For eggs, maybe crack them in a separate bowl before using if worried?

>> No.5513030

if it's in a can, it'll be edible indefinitely so long as the metal doesn't corrode and is airtight. 100+ year old corned beef has been salvaged from shipwrecks and were still edible. The texture will deteriorate though and it'll probably taste like shit but it'll be safe.
