School food is as bad as fast food, really. I remember all of my school meals being almost entirely carbs + milk. Almost no protein or fats or good carbs. "Vegetables" were usually corn or potatoes, if we got any fruit it was sugary applesauce, fruit cup, fruit juice, maybe a banana. Main dish was typically pizza, hamburger, spaghetti, etc.

The lunchroom also carried all manner of gas station food and there were snack/soda machines everywhere.

Part of a recent visit with in-laws included joining my nephew for lunch at his elementary school. It was shockingly terrible. What was astounding was how tooth rattlingly sweet everything was. The menu was: chicken nuggers in very sweet orange sauce, rice, mushy unseasoned boiled frozen veg medley (the best thing there), milk, raw broccoli with "dipping sauce", which turned out to be some heavily sweetened take on ranch dressing and apples, which the kids were made to take, but almost all of them ended up in the garbage. The alternate for the broccoli was canned fruit in heavy syrup.

Of course most of the kids (including my nephew) were fat.

I thought rule one of feeding kids was don't let them have too much sugar. Obviously whoever set the standards for school lunches never got that menu.

It was really appalling.

I brown-bagged it up until highschool, so aside from pizza day I never ate the school lunch. In highschool I started buying lunch said I had a job. We had a ballin'-ass sandwich station my freshman year that was only a step down from Subway (which is good for school-standards) and we had amazing tater tots. Sophmore year they had removed the sandwich station for no reason but the food was still good; chicken patties, decent burgers, tater tots or fries, usually something like a knock-off Del-Monte fruit cup or something.

Then there was a grease fire or something and everything went downhill. Chicken patties and pizza were still passable, but everything else went to shit. Honestly, I love school chicken patties man, those shits were great.

we joke about this, but I do wish we could change this relatively recent cultural shift toward food abundance in first world countries. eating constantly. I mean, if you're a lumberjack or you work outdoors digging ditches or doing construction (not sitting in an air conditioned dump truck but actually physical labor), then yeah, by all means you need extra caloric intake... but >90% of people don't need to eat every 4 waking hours. It disgusts me when I go to see my mom and dad and they have these snack foods on their in table so they can snack of food 24/7 while watching television.

Or if I go over for dinner and we just finish eating, an hour later they'll be saying shit like "man, I'm hungry again!"

I eat one meal a day, generally in the late afternoon. Occasionally I'll have a piece of fruit or maybe a glass of milk or almonds or something in the morning. I'm good with that. My stomach is used to it.

We need to teach that food, while a necessity, is not something you should be doing just because. At least make the school lunches light and relatively small. Some veggies, a piece of fruit, maybe a small amount of complex carbs and water. Anything more than that is redundant and should be cut.

my school lunches weren't healthy. there was a main meat dish which was half carbs, a veg or two which was always mashed potatoes, french fries, or canned corn or green beans, a fruit dish which was a little chopped fruit in a tray of jello, they'd give us a roll or slice of bread even though the man portion was mostly carbs, and we had an assortment of milk and sweetened milks to choose from. oh there was also dessert cakes for 50 cents extra, also 100% carbs and sugar. you could add gravy or shitty nacho cheese to anything for free if they had it (they usually did). I don't know how they could feed that to us, this was the main cafeteria line too. There was another line where you could buy separate items like cheeseburers, fried chicken, frozen burritos, fries, doritos, moon pies, anything bad you could dream up.

Last thing, it was considered very uncool to bring your own lunch to school. Nobody brought healthy lunches the only people that packed a brown bag were smelly spergs who wouldn't eat anything but bologna sandwiches with ketchup and cheetos that their mom made.

If you have severe lactose intolerance and drink a lot of milk you will get a nice diarrhea but if it is just a little you will be okay.

Now if you have severe allergy them things can be worse.

Pretzel and mustard? Damn, that's nice. Must be a chicago lunch? Pretty cool.

My own school lunch experience was fantastic, actually. Growing up in Miami, my elementary lunches were staffed by old Miami natives, true Southern black women cooks, and they pretty much cooked like Emeril or Paula Deen. Lots of butter or bacon in the vegetables, collards, black eyed peas, butter beans, whatever was fresh. Kids ate the green beans or fried okra first. We'd get BBQ ribs, pulled pork, sausage with red beans. Big casseroles of chili mac, jambalaya, or mac n cheese with a solid inch of cheese on top, all golden and browned. Homemade soft parker house rolls, sweet hawaiian (bahamian) bread rolls, homemade texas toast, or cornbread, sometimes with jalapeno. Yea, we had high fat food, I'm sure, but it wasn't sugary throughout, or just the sweet veggies of corn/carrots, and plates were clean. Kids loved school lunch. They still played with the orange juice popsicle, or the milk and peas, of course. But no one laughed at the food.

I have lived there and i could stay all my life with Japanese food.

The flavors are delicate and I have met people that asked me what is the difference between different kinds of rice (my favorite is jasmine by the way) and I replied that they have different flavors and textures. To that person they all taste the same so I wouldn't blame you for thinking everything have the same taste. I guess different people have different palate. Probably like some people are color blind, others are just colorblind for certain colors. Some people can't differentiate flavors very well and need high contrast like mustard and ketchup.

In my (Canadian) high school, the food was pretty great and varied but it all cost money. They had cold stuff like wraps, sandwiches, salads, pasta salads etc. as well as hot food like pizza, poutine, burgers/chicken sandwiches, and every day they'd make one special meal combo. A full meal was normally $1.50-$3.50. Food made by the culinary arts classes was also sold at pretty reasonable prices (and was often healthier/a larger portion of food), but it sold out quickly.

There was a two-year "Dark Ages" where the school converted everything to healthy options, replacing french fries with these disgusting bright-yellow baked and/or microwaved potato segments and stuff like that, but everyone stopped buying the food and they went back to the old menu by the time I was in senior year.

In elementary and middle school, there was no cafeteria at all and no food was served to students, everyone was expected to bring a bag lunch.

Amerifat here, that does look like some of our school lunches from back when I was in high school (2006-2010).

Typical lunch:
> Overcooked shredded turkey floating in lukewarm canned gravy in a paper cup /or/ "pizza" consisting of two slices of pepperoni and burnt cheese on an overcooked bleached white flour hoagie /or/ deep fried random bits of unidentifiable chewy meat (chicken gizzards?)
> Stale bleached white-flour roll with no butter
> Canned fruit in syrup
> Soggy green beans with no salt
> Fat-free chocolate milk

All of which was probably sitting on a counter or under a heat lamp for at least two hours. I just skipped breakfast/lunch all year, which I continue to do out of habit.

Buddy's cousin was in and out of jail and prison his whole life (mostly B&E and drug dealing) and he said the food
in county jails was the absolute worst; over cooked, under cooked, actual rotten food, etc. as nobody in county
jail is there for long and thus nobody gives a shit.

But he said food in prison was great, as the chefs were lifers or in for decades and took pride in their jobs, as

In my opinion Japanese food itself is delicious, it has a great balances of different flavors but the flavor if it isn't typically too harsh or extreme. Something else to keep in mind is if you were raised in the USA you're probably used to a huge amount of variety. In my city we have Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Italian, Indian, and many other types of foods. In Japan people have a certain way of cooking they've all grown up on and learned. The way they make their food is a part of their culture. Since you're probably used to such a variety I could understand you getting bored after 8 months, but I'd imagine if you were born Japanese and lived in Japan your whole life you'd probably enjoy the food more.

It's expensive for sure but at least we can still call that a meal.
That said when people get total freedom in the uni years they do eat pure shit all day every day on purpose. Like, one of my friend survived mostly of the same cereal brand + milk + orange juice. I like school canteens in australia (pic related)
Typically students bring their own lunches, but if you forget/didnt have time/special occasion/parents are lazy pieces of shit, then you go to the tuck shop. I was allowed to order my lunch once a week (but my mum made such good lunches I wasn't fussed anyway)

Typically you place a lunch order (in the morning - write your order on a paper bag and put the cash inside), and it will be delivered to your classroom 2 minutes before lunch starts, so all the kids can eat together.

They have daily specials too (e.g. monday lasagne, tuesday sushi, wednesday chicken burger, thursday vietnamese spring rolls, friday pizza),
or you can get a meat pie, sandwich, salad, fruit, etc. Juice, no soft drinks (lol can you believe it burgerclaps?!)
they also have sweets/icecreams/chips, hot chocolate in the winter but there is a big focus on healthy food. And it's all reasonably priced.

Sometimes the ladies that run the tuck shop are fuckable, but more often they are fat and saggy, hence the term "tuck shop arms" (you know when they wave to you and the fat below the tricep wobbles to and fro)

ahh good times

In Poland school food was pretty great (expect fucking "fish" meat patty - idk how to say it in english). Normally we get food like fish + potatoes + some carrot, or a pork chop with potatoes, pancakes with cheese, chicken cooked with vegetables with rice. Pretty decent meals. I've never eaten a burger in any school. They just don't serve shitty food here. Also the stuff was like your family, everyone calling them "aunt". Good times :)

School lunch in the rural South was an absolute joke and looking back on it, it doesn't shock me how many people are obese as fuck now. Hamburger was a cold lifeless smashed patty, no cheese. Pizza was the typical rectangle cardboard shit. Oh god the "chicken fajitas" that looked like they just came out of a toilet of diarrhea. The only thing they did right was these spicy fries in middle school that they only did for those 3 years and decided it was a bad idea because kids were getting into fights over stealing them.

I brown-bagged it sporadically in grade school, but that was because my parents didn't have money to pay for school lunch, yet, the district said my dad made "too much money" for me to get it for free. I think what my mom made for me was slightly healthier than the school shit, but probably not.

As far as I remember, lunch during elementary school was really varied: you always had pasta(with tomato sauce, with pesto, with tomatoes and mozzarella), rice(without anything or with tomato) or Lasagne.
For the main course, well, it was always a surprise: carrots, spinaches, broccoli, raditz, Roman salad, even grilled aubergines(which were trashed by all the kids that day, including me[WTF is a grilled aubergine, come on]), with every kind of meat or fish.
Usually, a seasonal fruit for dessert, but when Christmas occured of school finished, we could have or a chocolate pudding, or little pandori, or some traditional Tuscan cookies, the so-called "cenci".

Obviously, for lactose-intolerants, religiously-forbidden kids and so on, menus were a little different.

I went to a decent middle/high school and the cafeteria food there would probably shock your average European, but I liked it a good bit.

Soy burgers, industrial pizza, fried chicken, fake nacho cheese, I think I went all my years without eating anything that resembled a salad.

The thing of that was, I was a low-class loser with no culinary tradition at home (hell, I cooked the dinner). When you are used to eating shit food, you don't notice that there's something wrong with it. That's why it's just business as usual. Actually trying to change it by removing the pizza, burgers, etc. would get fought against by children and parents, because whatever shit they replace it with would be awful. You can't make a meal that is healthy *and* cheap *and* looks appetizing to those kind of people who grow up hating vegetables and getting completely attuned to pizza and burgers as dietary staples.

All foods in America are just variations of corn, even though nobody knows it. Just look at that tray. That pizza? Made out of cornmeal. The cheese is just processed corn. The chocolate milk? That's like 90% corn juice with food colouring. The pretzel is made out of the discarded parts of the kernels, and that fruit you see are probably jellied corn. That cutlery is probably made out of corn as well

Not *just* corn, but corn, soybeans, wheat, tomatoes, and milk. I mean, try to find a school lunch in America that isn't 90% just those things.
Pasta? Wheat noodles, tomatoes and corn syrup in the sauce.
Pizza? Milk in the cheese, wheat in the crust, tomatoes and corn syrup in the sauce.
Burgers? Soy meat patty, milk in the cheese, wheat in the bun.
And, and we drink milk, of course. The only parts that don't fit this are the salad and the fruit sides, and they are small and irregular and the latter is probably in a cornsyrup-filled sauce.

We should really stop eating because it's routine.

lunch is the meal that your body can miss, as long as they eat breakfast and dinner. Not serving kids lunch is only going to hurt kids that aren't also being fed at home, in which case they need help that the school can't give them.

None of the schools I went to had served lunches, we had a store where you could buy food, but it was filled with fast food shit and candy, not a fruit or vegetable (unless you count warm wilted lettuce) in sight. most kids bought lunches from home. or we snuck out to the court and bought it from there. > Not serving kids lunch is only going to hurt kids that aren't also being fed at home, in which case they need help that the school can't give them.
People believe that school can help these kids though, because school is supposed to be the means by which the state/society shapes and molds the future generations, there is a responsibility to them that goes beyond just providing education opportunity (so goes this logic).
The give these kids a free lunch, and it's another form of social welfare. Besides making sure that they're actually eating, it's supposed to give kids likely to be truant a reason to show up to school and maybe learn something. Carrots and stick.

I went to a private school in Hong Kong, at the start of every month, my parents would get a letter telling them what would be on the menu each day. You either opt in and write a check how many school days there were and get delicious food cooked on campus every day from ingredients trucked into the school an hour or so before school started. It was mostly stir fried veges, rice and other Asian dishes.

Most of the ingredients like meat and vegetables were fresh, except for sauces or canned goods. I think the only time we ever got burgers and the like was when the school's head cook had to take a day off because his son was getting married.

Oh, we got home made soup on Tuesdays and Thursdays and orange juice from this juice bar across from our school that had a commercial juice bar that had this fuck off huge orange juicer on Wednesdays and Fridays.

I think the price per meal rounded to something like 2.50USD.

AFA the people that are saying people get fed by the school etc, the way it works in America is the offer school lunches, you have to pay for these, they also offer free or reduced lunches if you cant afford full priced, you also have the option to bring your own stuff from home, IME if a kid is sitting there not eating they will ask why and if they dont have money for a plate they go get them one anyway free of charge.

There has never been a link between salt and heart attacks.

Most people secrete more than twice the fda suggested intake of sodium in sweat. With additional sodium lost through urine.

Sodium effect on blood pressure, in moderation, is only truly noticed in people who have one of 18 rare disorders. Total population counts with these disorders account for only about .02% of the population. for larger intakes, there is a short term increase in blood pressure, but intake has to exceed 20 times the fda's recommended level before there is a long term increase.

Even if sodium intake were to be cut down to 0. blood pressure would only fall 5mmHg. With the average sufferer of high blood pressure being 45mmHg over normal range.

Side effects of sodium restriction include nausea lethargy, and death

Anyway at these things most times the teams set up in the cafeteria. My god I shit you not it was fucking amazing. absolutely huge with real tables and wooden chairs. One hole wall was just glass looking into a forest with a lake.

Their lunch service was CATERED by some company in the city. On top of that they had a built in taco bell / kfc / mcdonalds (might of been burger king, can't remember)

It was at that moment I realized the poverty gap. All these kids were from rich familes who lived in huge houses that paid a lot of taxes that went back into this school. Most parents ordered lunch for their kids as a treat on Friday. Instead of the usual sandwich and fruit, we'd get a sausage roll and maybe a drink.

If any kids didn't have lunch (for whatever reason) they'd be given dry biscuits and peanut butter by the principal.

>Today, as of 2004, 99% of elementary school students and 82% of junior high school students eat kyūshoku (school lunch) in Japan. The food is grown locally, is almost never frozen, and, barring dietary restrictions, is the same for every student. Children in most districts cannot bring their own meals to school until they reach high school, nor do schools have vending machines; instead, children are taught to eat what they are served.

Seems like a good way to introduce kids to a decent diet and make them try different food. Here it is pretty common for people to claim to hate food that they never tried.

Whats worse is when they try to pass off shittier food as healthy.

Went from Sheperds pie with a bunch of veg to some shitty pasta with sausage pieces and tomato sauce.

because its "the law" thanks to Michelle Obama's new healthy eating act.

My old school had awesome lunch, fresh salads, grinders, pizza better than Dominos

But a lot of schools can't afford good lunch programs and get OP's abomination

Unless you go to a huge, well-funded university, it doesn't get much better in college. I went to 3 universities before graduating.

At the huge SEC school, there was a cafeteria on campus that catered to the football team and was rated 4 starts by a well-known food review group (I can't remember who).

At the two smaller schools, the cafeteria was run by Aramark - the same guys who are in charge of prison cafeterias. And the food at both sucked and reminded me of high school food.
