I have calculated my daily intake of sodium to be 4g (not salt, actual sodium) This is twice the maximum amount but I fuckin love salt. Everything is better with more salt. Even if already salty. I want to learn how stupid i am and how dangerous this is

Good for you.

Two great starts are googling it and/or talking about it to your doctor.

OP, I'm so glad that you care about your health!

It's easy to understand why you have a salt addiction-- your genes demand it! Essential nutrients must be obtained by outside sources, and sodium is very, very important. Cool things like your nervous system would not work without sodium.

Because you live in a post-scarcity society, as far as nutrients go, this positive feedback system for getting more and more salt becomes a bit of a problem. Your body just doesn't know when to stop. The more you get, the more you become accustomed to, the more you crave.

This can only be fixed through the thing that every addict is aware of: the tolerance break.

Tough, I know, but if you suddenly cut back on salt, perhaps even a bit less than your allotted maximum, you'll start to notice and be satisfied by salt in your food that is in reasonable amounts.

To tide you over, invest in other spices with strong flavors! Make sure to check the ingredients list if you get mixes-- many major spice mixes are chock full of salt as their cheapest ingredient. This will kind of defeat the point of the tolerance break.

Many foods are also naturally spicy and pungent, which will make life easier for you.

To your health, anon. Good luck!

Salt doesn't cause high blood pressure, those findings were based off terrible science where they stopped the sodium intake of the participants, they got dehydrated and their blood got thicker leading to what seemed like lower blood pressure.

Eat your salt.

Salt is water soluble. That means you pee any excess salt out of your body. If you don't already have high blood pressure, just drink plenty of water and you'll be fine. If you do have high blood pressure, talk with a doctor and find out, among other lifestyle changes you need to make, how much you should cut down on your sodium intake.

Don't worry about it too much. (unless you have high blood preasure), just make sure you drink plenty of water.

I've lower my sodium intake by not adding any extra salt to the things i eat; like i used to, and by not eating any junk food, but i still go over my sodium intake every other day.

Oh, sugar can also stand to be taken down a peg or five! This was just a salt thread, though.

For sugar, I would recommend satisfying your sweet tooth with fructose as much as possible. Glucose is not evil, but we definitely overuse it! Fruit isn't your only option-- many root vegetables are rich in fructose. For example, I like balsamic glazed carrots, and will eat them like candy. Fructose is relatively much sweeter than glucose, and you'll start to notice it more with the same tolerance break idea.

(Also, there's a reason why cinnamon and allspice are in pies so much. So fucking sweet. Good flavoring substitute.)

man, the key factor is not the amount of sodium you eat, it's the *ratio of potassium to sodium*.
it should be at least 2:1.

nothing wrong with 4g of sodium everyday as long as you also get 8g of potassium. ...which is admittedly damn hard.

now before anyone starts chugging potassium chloride, be fucking careful! your body is not tolerant of sudden spikes in potassium -- intake must be spread out, like it would be if you got your potassium from vegetables etc.

the same ratio holds true for the secondary electrolytes, magnesium and calcium. shoot for twice as much magnesium as calcium (and NOT the other way around, as was erroneously reported in articles for decades.)
