>there are people who believe self service kiosks will work

Maybe in 10 years, but not anytime soon. I think people underestimate how technologically inept a large part of the population is.

They had one of these at a local Jack in the Box and it was only there for about a month because the majority of people just didn't want/know how to use it.

Also, 80% of the time I go grocery shopping, there's that one person who tries to use the self checkout with no idea how it works.

>> No.5446667

The reason people have trouble with self-checkout is because those machines are terrible.

>> No.5446686

Over only the last few years I've seen those self service things at grocery stores explode. I can't see people being a major part of retail in the future because self checkout is 100x fucking better.

The problem with a lot of them though is that they can't take promotional offers and you can't ask them questions and it's a huge pain in the ass if you've already paid for the damn thing before you notice a problem. There are pretty simple ways around this stuff though.

I sincerely hope we do away with the stores altogether. I'd be happy with a store that allowed me to order my shit online and then have my order waiting for me at the nearest branch.

>> No.5446729

These are so much better than the self service things at the supermarket though. Wawa (local convenience store) has been using these things for years and they work excellently.

I feel like most of the confusion at the supermarket comes from the fact that everything is a scale. It gets weighed on the scanner, then again in the bagging area to make sure you don't steal. The food ordering ones are much simpler.

Ever go to a fast food place and stand behind someone who looks at the menu as if they haven't ever heard of a cheeseburger?

>uhhhh, ummmm, uhhh, I think I want a burger, do you have any coffee? How big are your medium french fries? What kind of oil is the chicken fried in?

I would be more inclined to eat at a place that used as much robotics and automation as possible. Electronic ordering menu, food made by robots etc. It sounds like i can't stand human interaction, but if you're such a failure in life that all you can do is menial labor like flipping burgers, cleaning toilets, and pushing buttons on an order screen, then I really don't feel bad if you get replaced by a touch screen.

>> No.5446813

Somewhat true, if the weighing platform is miscalibrated it can freak out and require a manager to unlock, and if you accidentally flip around the product just so as you're trying to find the bar code, it can scan twice.

Still the majority of the problems are user-induced.

That's such bullshit. If your company can't afford to pay someone $15 an hour then you should close up now. Somewhere like McDonald's throws more shit in the bin every hour than they pay their staff for the whole day. People have these highfalutin arguments about minimum wage but they never seem to take into account that the money they are talking is basically nothing for a company and everything for an employee. They probably are retarded but keep in mind those places have a high turnover of staff meaning the people telling others what to do have only been there for a few months themselves and there just simply is no one with the experience to fix things when they are broken.

No to mention they get paid so little that they have 0 incentive to learn how to do things properly and there is a lot of pressure when something like that doesn't work because people do get mad about something this petty. If somebody at their place of work started screaming at them they second they made an error they'd just walk out.

The point really was that they can afford to pay extra but they won't and it's probably not because of the money they save. I think it's probably just easier to have a bunch of disposable dipshits that you bully for a few months or a year before they quit than establishing a working relationship with someone that will actually be an asset to your company. Ultimately if they treated employees better and paid them a reasonable wage rather than an exploitative one they'd probably probably make more money back. the purpose of a business it to make money, not provide a life for it's employees.

if minimum wage is not enough for you, go ahead and find another job.

Salaries are set on supply and demand. If you have a huge rush of people coming in for some World Series or something , you're going to pay people more to keep up with that business.

If you're doing slow... then you pay minimum wage and it's a grind.

EVERYONE wants more money. I don't understand why you think we should start with the most expendable people.

I've never ever gotten a minumum wage job.... and ive had many jobs in many fields since i was 15.

Not a single minimum wage job. Becuase i considered myself to be skilled enough for $10/hour (back then it was 5.50 minumum)

And i got it. Then i got more. Then i got more.

If you want more - go get more. Don't fucking bitch at the employer for wanting more to. he doesn't owe you anything. Its not his responsibility to make sure you survive.

Also we would fire are lowest paid workers, slim down, take on less profitable work, and scale back the hours. For me this means I'll make 30% more but work 50% less. I guess I'll get to go find a 2nd (shittier) job.

> "The US Goverment is hiding The Truth from us. They're putting a veil over our eyes to shield us from mass hysteria. The human body generates more bio-electricity than a 120-volt battery and over 25,000 BTUs of body heat. Combined with a form of fusion, the government has found all the energy they would ever need. There are fields, endless fields, where human beings are no longer born. We are grown. For the longest time I wouldn't believe it, and then I saw the fields with my own eyes. Watch them liquefy the dead so they could be fed intravenously to the living. And standing there, facing the pure horrifying precision, I came to realize the obviousness of The Truth" - Alex Jones

sounds like someone doesn't understand linearity

the problem isn't that you're fucking with the scale, it's that the scale is so fucking cheap the plate isn't sufficiently large to hold the average shop and weigh it accurately, especially if you're using your own bags because you want to be green/don't feel like paying for plastic ones that fall apart before you get home/don't want a lot of plastic bags to get rid of later

you literally cannot do anything right because in most of those machines, the plate is a 6" square directly under the bag rack, which gets in the way of using other bags etc

the irony? a second scale (or multiple plates) would cost around $5 each, which is nothing compared to the cost of the machines - but the manufacturers don't make them that way as standard and the resellers who buy them direct from the manufacturers and gussy them up for retail chains won't order additions for the manufacturers except by doubling the cost of each unit (because that's how sales logic works) and nobody would buy direct when they could just get into a buy-to-service agreement with a third party

tl;dr everyone knows they don't work, nobody actually cares

the absolute best part? if you live in the US (but not the EU), they don't even have to be calibrated to a single standard - individual scales can easily be as much as 50 grams out at the baseline and when you get up to capacity, something like a kilo out, on arrival from the manufacturer. this is just the limitation of the technology - the only way around it is to calibrate the control board of each unit

calibration takes a couple of minutes per scale and there are agreed ISO9001 standards to meet- but again, the US doesn't care enough to make it mandatory, so the scales never get calibrated

now if you've ever added something to the bag and it just wouldn't get recognised, that's probably why- the scales were not calibrated properly because the store/supplier of the machines wanted to save money
