Why is fine dining so fucking pretentious? Look at this pic.

>2 forks
>2 spoons
>2 knives
>3 FUCKING GLASSES
>barely any room between seats, thus invading personal space when seated

This isn't elegant. This isn't fancy. It's cluttered, impersonal and clearly adheres to the HURRR SOOO SOPHISTICATEDDDDDDD mentality that fine dining seems to cater to.

Absolutely disgusting.

You DON'T NEED 2 forks... You DON'T NEED 2 spoons ..

a steak knife AND a bitter knife I could understand, but this are 2 butterknives which YOU DON'T FUCKING NEED.

And yes, I wanted to mention portion sizes, but they won't be served until tonight and I didn't have them in the pic I took

Looks like some sort of cooperate event, over crowding and trying to look fancy while serving food that is mediocre is to be expected.

To be honest, if you want to do fine dining, then account for the atmosphere - from the amount of space per person on each table to the environment and lighting.

If you want to host some event where everyone's all bunched up like that, removing the stupid amount of glasses would already go a long way. Though I suspect that the glasses not use (after you've selected the one you're drinking based on which drink you want) will be removed to at least free up some space.

i can't argue with the fact that your table looks cluttered and unpleasant to sit in but i presume you're at an event or something which is never as nice/intimate as a private meal

either that or you're in a seriously badly designed restaurant

>> No.5400826

>>5400800
why would you want to eat your salad, main and dessert with the same fork
or
eat soup and stir your coffee with the same spoon
or drink water/red wine/ white wine out of the same glass

or course no one is forcing you to go to these places. I dont like curry so I just dont go to curry houses instead of bitching about it

there's too many people at that table. that has nothing to do with table setting etiquette.

what you're seeing is not even full service table setting because it's lacking a salad fork, soup spoon, butter knife, soup bowl. it's most likely a banquet where they'll bring those items with those platters as people have pre-ordered via RSVP.

the placement of two wine glasses indicates they intend to serve fish which is why i said they have no salad fork--it is a fish fork--and that they have no butter knife as that is a service/table knife with a fish knife next to it.

you may convince yourself that being crude is "cool" but you won't convince anyone who knows better. you're being very silly.

What's disgusting is you thinking it's okay to use the same fork and knife for every course and dish brought to the table. Nice way to muddle all your flavors together and taint your palate. Go back to your trailer, Jethro.

This isn't fine dinning at all, way too many people at the table, Michelin inspectors would laugh at you.

The concept of fine dinning is simple: you don't have to worry about anything. If you have several set of spoons, knives and all it's only because you won't have to use the same ones of different course. They bring you a new plate every course anyway, several glasses if so you can have water, wine and a disgestive at the same time without cleaning a glass. It's practical.

I agree, you only need 1 knife and 1 fork (not even a spoon), if you really dont want to mix your food just wipe the fork on your trouser leg or something after each plate.

What's wrong with 3 glasses? One for for red wine, one for white, one for water.

They usually remove one of the wine glasses depending on which wine you pick.

Two sets of cutlery isn't even that much.

This. OP pic is a banquet set up for some kind of business or charity event.

As for fine dining being pretentious, remember the kind of people who can afford to dine this way are generally the upper classes. As a result fine dining maintains many bourgeois conceits because that's what the the majority of patrons have come to expect. These conceits seems pretentious to those not in that class, but to those who are they're just part of dining out.

>> No.5403193

The people who dine at tables with places set so closely together aren't the upper class. They're middle and upper-middle class people thinking they're more sophisticated and wealthier than they are.

>They're middle and upper-middle class people thinking they're more sophisticated and wealthier than they are.
Like I said, some kind of charity or business event. It's an attempt to ape the upper class in hopes of projecting a classy image. But it's still copying the bourgeois conceits found in fine dining. You see the same thing when the middle class attempts to pu8ll off a "formal" event. In these cases it actually is pretentious, because people are acting in a manner not familiar to them in order to project an air of a higher station.

But in fine dining it's generally not pretentious, because most of the clientele are people for whom the bourgeois conceits of multiple utensils, plates, glasses and courses along with service to match are not unusual.
