Hey guys. I love honeydew melons, but I only get them from my job's lounge.

What's a good, reliable ripeness test I could implement?

Also, fruit general.

white rind and aroma. you can smell it. green rind means it's not ripe yet.

i had a blood orange today for a snack. got some cara cara oranges too.

looks: white
smells: sweet
feels: firm, but with a slight give, like an orange

If it looks and feels proper but doesn't smell sweet, the melon was picked too early and allowed to "ripen" (lolno) off the vine, yielding a meh fruit. As with most food, smell is the most important factor in choosing the right one.

I guess I goofed. I bought a melon, however, there is no aroma. Is there any saving it? should I chalk it up to a loss?

Cara Cara oranges are pretty damn good. Just bought some earlier today, along with some Fuji apples.

you can eat it and it will probably be good for cooking and smoothies, but it won't be as good plain as a properly picked melon

Not only are storebough melons picked too soon, but they are probably subjected at some point to some cold temp that kind of halts ripening to it's full potential, or otherwise affecting a flavor.

I buy melons all the time, and I do sniff their stem areas for a floral melon-ish scent. If I smell nothing, I might take a pass. I might also look around for a more ripe colored skin, depending how quickly I intend to enjoy it at home. I usually eat them with a knife and fork, so I might not want to delve into it before the weekend. Despite my careful home ripening, and appearances or smell, I would claim only a 50% success rate of getting one that is delicious. If they really rock, I'll go back to the store and eat melon for three weeks straight. If it sucks, I might no buy it again there, and shop elsewhere. You either live somewhere close to the vine, or you don't. It's either peak season, or it isn't. The factors can be out of your hands based on appearances.

Dude, my family just moved to the Okanagan this year and they've got so many fruit orchards here. It's heaven!
