I know a few professional chefs and they all seem to eat total crap at home. They'll either eat premade meals or absurdly simple junk (one regularly eats sausage sandwiches on their own as a main meal). Is this common and is it because cooking just ends up feeling like a job?

That's probably the case. Ever since I started working at a tv station, I've stopped watching tv. I just can't do it. I imagine some chefs feel the same.

Plus, there's the fact that being a chef is an exhausting job, and it's easier to pop a frozen pizza in the oven when you get home than to cook a good meal for yourself.

As someone who works in one of the top 5 restaurants in my state, yes. this is true in about 65% of the sous, and execs i know

they spend all day cooking gourmet meals, and when they finally get off work they just want to get a big mac or s/t

Yep. As everyone else said its not uncommon. A huge portion of it for me is that i have no time/energy to cook at home.

Maybe they are not real chefs because a chef is passionate about food and will have a refined pallet, eating that kind of food everything would be soul destroying.

I was thinking maybe they just see it as work now, but if you really loved something you'd enjoy doing it for work or you would no longer do it for work if you felt you were beginning to hate it. If you now hate what you love there would be no point living.

When I worked in a tea house, I never wanted to drink tea, even though I love it.

I would spend all day near it, and even get drinks there sometimes (we got them for free for working there), but when I got home, I just didn't want it, even if I was thirsty, it didn't matter, I didn't want tea.

I would sometimes still make it, but it decreased greatly when I started working there.

Not for all Chefs a lot of them don't cook at home b/c they are too fucking tired. When I was lower in the ranks I had such a killer work load i was to tired to cook when I got home. Now my schedule is more relaxed so I do a lot of cooking at home.

Its because only foodies treat food like some sort of religion and treat even the most insignificant meals like its some sort of statement. Real chefs live in the real world and have no problems with get something cheap and fast sometimes

You can shove your tired cliches up your ass. There's no such thing as having such a deep love for cooking that you would enjoy spending 60 hours a week in a cramped 100-degree kitchen full of filthy Mexicans and drug-addled assholes.

Your high school advisor may tell you to find a job that you love so much that you'd willingly do it for free, but if such a job ever existed, people wouldn't pay you tens of thousands of dollars each year to do it.
