Although this sweeping assumption already demonstrates pretty loud and clear that you've never owned a passport and probably never will, I should still warn you that fast food safety standards are nonexistent in third-world countries. In places like the Middle East there are absolutely no legal authorities that monitor food safety standards (and if they do come around, they'll happily take a small bribe to look the other way), so megacorporations feel no need to waste money on imposing such standards. And unlike the guy across the street who owns the shawarma stand he cooks at, the employees at a Middle Eastern McDonalds don't risk losing their entire customer base if they give food poisoning to a member of their community.

There are a number of massive foodborne illness outbreaks and even deaths that can (inconclusively) be traced back to third-world fast food joints - considering it already happens all the time in America, what the fuck do you think is going to happen when these companies operate in a place where they have absolutely nobody monitoring them?

The most violently painful and long-lasting vomiting/diarrhea combo I have ever had in my entire life was unequivocally the result of an Middle Eastern Hardees. 4 days of stabbing, gut-wrenching pain that I would not wish upon my worst enemy. I've spent years traveling in the third world and no street food vendor EVER came close to that or any other horrifying assumption of yours, not even once. Chains on the other hand, whether local or international, were a fucking 50/50 crapshoot.

I have been emailing back and forth today with Kenji Lopez-Alt who basically runs the web's most popular food blog Serious Eats about how, as a person on food stamps with a low-paying job, I find the idea of a "vegan experience month" to be elitist and shallow to put it nicely. What does everyone here think of Serious Eats and the idea of doing a Vegan cooking month vs. doing a month of meals based off a budget of a minimum wage job + food stamps? Please comment here and on Serious Eats itself to let your voices be heard. I think his Ivory Tower Echo Chamber could use some fresh voices.
