I love gyros. This kit is edible but incredibly disappointing. Barely any meat and mediocre flavor, at least not enough to stand up to a pita.

What I would suggest is frying the meat and incorporating it into an omelette with feta.

OP, this is soooooooo easy to make yourself.
It's the same process as a meatloaf. Mince some onion and garlic, combine with ground meat mixture and spices, bake like a meatloaf or in patties to freeze separately. Slice/grill. You can even make it ahead. I do the whole thing in my food processor. I ask the butcher for only like a 1/4lb of lamb, and then add pork or beef, or both to the processor to blend them. I use dried mint, oregano, paprika, salt, pepper.

To make the yogurt sauce, a tub of Cabot greek 10% fat, grate a clove of garlic, shred some cucumber (squeeze it out). There ya go. Kick it up how you wish, with mint or lemon zest.

On the sandwich itself, I like slivered onions, cucumber, tomato, not so much lettuce, nah. And a TON of sauce, mmm.

Everything freezes well, even the sauce which just needs a stir.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold the fucking phone.

The meat on gyros is GROUND meat? I thought it was slices from a specific cut or something.

>> No.5136147

gyro is from the word gyroscope, ie rotating thingie. It was a GREEK thing, first, not Turkish.

One single turkish guy went to Germany, and using this rotating vertical spit, made some pork-free halal friendly version of the pita sandwich as he wished. His cheaper sauce without fresh dairy, and so forth. It caught on, he sold franchises.

Meanwhile, in the rest of the world, vertical meat spits went into restaurants with greek recipe and local recipes both. Tacos al pastor in Mexico City is one incarnation. In the US, which has zero problem with pork, the original gyro was the pork/lamb mixture that was sliced off the loaf, as it crisped up.

Meanwhile, back in Europe, people who had never been to greece or had no problem with pork themselves, were eating that lamb and porkfree doner kebab and mistakenly think it's somehow the original or the best of anything whatsoever. It's just one guy's recipe for his sandwich shop. Carry on now.

I think originally, it was whole meat stacked onto the spit, and then sliced against the grain. A blend of meat. In the tacos al pastor example, it's pork, slices of pineapple, and lots of chili paste. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tacos-al-Pastor.jpg

Originally, before the "loaf" a gyro was lamb and other meats stacked like that. It's even possible where you eat, it's still done like that, all dripping and cross marinating like that.

This how it still is at the Kosher Jewish place down the street.
