/ck/ i am going to an asian grocery store today, possibly 2 or 3.

what are the essentials i should try to pick up if at all possible?

the first one is a solidly korean market, and the second is some kind of general asian diaspora one.

sounds very interesting.

does anyone know any herbs that they might sell?

>> No.5086127

fish sauce. get a few different kinds because they are all a little different. rice paper rounds. they last forever and you can toss stuff together to make spring rolls for an easy lunch. durian fruit. you either love it or hate it. fruit that smells like cheese/feet and is strangely addictive. you have to at least give it a try. soy sauce. look for a raw one that is traditionally made for a nice change of pace. sometimes it is called shoyu sauce. buy some cardamom pods. some chicken feet to make chicken broth. buy a lb or two and toss them in the freezer. When you make broth toss in three or four feet and it will give you wonderful flavor and get really gelatinous, sea vegetables. dried or otherwise. various types of miso.

no earthly idea. i just moved back to the area, and oddly enough had never went to any Asian markets when i grew up around there. mostly because they didnt exist.

actually, i might just document the whole thing for you guys with my phone.

huh. Im really into health food, I have really been wanting to go to an asian store, maybe find a bunch of healthy herbs that are normally overpriced at other stores like vitamin shoppe.

I heard that asian stores sometimes sell herbs in BULK like big whole solid pieces that you can take home and grind, yet they cost way less because they sell at more fair prices, because they are just really cool like that, yet I don't know if this is true.

would definitely be better than going to a health food store and buying a bottle of ginger stuffed into little capsules full of additives and magnesium stearate. just Horrible.

well some of them do. in some you can get GREAT BIG ASS ginger root, and ginseng, along with all kinds of weird chinese medicine herbs.

i wish i could find a place that has that snake wine, so i can level up as a hipster whiteboy.

Evoo, oregano and basil, sundried tomatoes and roasted red peppers should get you started. You can pick up pasta and canned tomatoes at a non asian store.

Get a big ass ginger and all you'll do is watch it slowly go bad because you can't use it all. Better to buy ginger as you need it since it doesn't store well

>> No.5086441

>>5086406
Frozen ginger works almost as well and is totally worth using versus letting it go bad. The texture suffers, but the flavor stays pretty intact.

I have drank the snake wine, its not really any different than normal sake except there is a pit viper staring at you in the bottle. My beat friends big brother mailed us a buncha crazy shit while he was stationed in Japan. As far as asian markets go get some thai fish sauce, thai sweet chili sauce and some good oyster sauce. Most all of the American style Chinese favorites are based on these 3 sauces.

its just more asian tasting mayo but its sooooooo good with asain dishes and makes any dish that uses mayo have a little kick in every bite. Just use it in smaller amounts because the pic I posted, 500g has 100 calories, 10g total fat, and 100mg of Sodium

Dried mushrooms (shiitake, wood ear).
Used to have to get sambal oelek there but seems to be in regular stores now.

also once you go to an asian market and buy fish, you wonder why you wasted money on other places except fish markets

they charge an arm and leg at american grocery stores
