Hey /ck/, I'm in the market for two whetstones, a medium grit (800-1000) and fine grit (3000-6000), because I feel using the hand-cranked horseshoe/hoof grindstone in the garage isn't doing my knives any good.

They hold up for a good month, but then it's back to the grind, literally.

Now I've had a look at GLOBAL's, but you have to buy their products physically from registered outlets, none of which are close to me, and their prices are...well, pricey.

Before I go charging off to Amazon or eBay or some other online retailer, has anyone bought a few whetstones online from a reliable source and been happy/overjoyed with them so far?
Any brands to avoid?

I've bought 2 stones in person and 2 on the internet not counting the edgepro stones.

It's more about the stone than about the vendor or the brand. Most of the big guys (king, shapton, etc) have high end and low end products, and even a variety of choices within each range for people who like mud, or speed, or whatever.

You budgeting for a flattening plate? Because you should, especially the 800 is likely to dish before you know it.

Well, like I said, while spending 160 quid on a pair of Global's sharpening whetstones is a little excessive for me, I'm willing to give that sort of money out if I know squandering on price means buying some shitty products I'll end up hating.

I just don't want to pay out this much, only to have someone shake their head at what an idiot I am for having not bought it somewhere else cheaper.

That sounds expensive but I'm not familiar with UK prices. In the US that would buy you a pretty sweet setup. For high end stuff in that budget, look at shapton pro, naniwa chocera, and shapton glass. Also consider DMT since they don't dish, but be careful comparing grits since they use a completely different scale to the japanese.

Don't listen to the people who say nice stones are a waste of money and the 14th generation weeaboo swordsmith can shave with a shovel ground on his front porch. You're probably not him, so buy the best you can afford.

I have a 8000/10000 grit water stone that I paid way too much for. If I could go back, I'd get just the plain 10000 grit in a non-combo, coz now I tend to sharpen far more regularly for shorter timespans. E.g. Two times a week for a couple of minutes each time.
This way my knives stay much sharper and I only use the final polishing stone. The 8000 grit is kind of a waste (for me anyway). None of my blades get in a bad enough state to ever need a lower grit.

I wouldn't buy re-branded stones with a knife company name (Global, Shun). You're paying a premium for essentially nothing. Instead, I would do as >>5083256 said and buy one of the well known brands (King, Shapton, Naniwa).

I've bought stones from the following places:
http://www.chefknivestogo.com/
http://www.toolsforworkingwood.com/
http://www.japaneseknifesharpening.com/
http://www.epicedge.com/
http://www.amazon.com/ (for diamond plates)

I don't know if they ship internationally, but you can at least compare the prices. Tools for Working Wood apparently has a sale on the Naniwa Super Stones right now:
