For the past two years on /ck/ we have had the "/ck/ Challenge". It is essentially a cooking competition somewhat inspired by Iron Chef, which also spun-off Masterchef, others, and the like.

The original host(s) of the challenge have decided to not repeat the experience this year, however, there is still a strong and repeated interest in it.

I don't really mind hosting it, but the community has grown substantially during the past years, and while I drafted the website for it, I just don't have the energy to code it right now.

I'd just like your help to test this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1AwwtAJiIjtGiIGAauKcBnqtk7KP_5mf6gIJXbHbJrhU/viewform

I'd like to see if I can work out winners from something so simple, and basic rules from it.

>> No.5081695

>>5081673

That's what I just realized. I actually split the scoring aspects (presentation, techniques, etc.) because of that, it puts a horizontal scroll bar.

I inverted one anyway.

I actually wanted to give each challenger an equal opportunity.

OK guys, right now I'm going to leave it as it is, but I'd really like to have some dummy results so I can figure out if this can work or not, OK?

We can discuss the details after. I have to get cigarettes, do laundry, and there's Gaymer Zone night at the club I usually go to and I haven't gone to check it out in a while.

I just really want some dummy results right now.

>> No.5081697

Sent you a test submit.

General question : what happens when a challenger fails to produce a dish for a round? Or doesn't deserve any points? It won't allow to submit while skipping someone.

Thanks for stepping up NOC.

If I was more than an alcoholic anon co/ck/ I might have some input (and would have actually participated in past challenges... aside from judging).

If you're going to be helping, however, you might think about taking up a secure trip code. This is one of the few instances where it makes sense. (Also see the fake SirSpice knife thread from earlier today.)

I'm looking forward to this happening again.

K, so the first system is easier for me to score. I want to avoid as much number crunching as possible. I'm looking for my boyfriend right now and I simply do not have the energy.

I know you guys are going to want/need a round soon, though, and I don't mind hosting it too much.

I'll get the form ready, and start a test round.

For those wanting a head start, the secret ingredent will be.... SALT!

It's a surprisingly heavy commitment. Ten to twelve weeks where you constantly have to plan, buy, cook, photograph, and edit. I spent a good ten hours every week putting a submission together. I went through three all-nighters, which I hadn't done since college.

Add to that, my family was getting pissed at me because I was making all this food that they couldn't eat (until very late at night, or early morning), because I had to photograph it all.

All in all, a satisfying experience. But, never again.

>> No.5083129

The scoring grid is somewhat confusing as someone as a voter from older competitions. Do I basically vote for one person as being best in one of the categories? And why are there two?

>> No.5083581

>>5082737

It's not going to be the same.

I was thinking of doing three /ck/ challenges, one in the dead of the winter (because what the fuck else), one in early summer (for the spring vegetables), one in the fall (for the harvest). Maybe another one.

It now just occurred to me that the /ck/ challenge could be an ongoing thing, a bit like sports, where people could enter at any time, and compete in the main event (final showdown).

But I am definitely not hosting 12 weeks in a row, blogging about it, etc. It's going to be a very friendly, very /ck/, very /4chan/ thing.

>> No.5083621

One of the reasons I sort of left /ck/ for the past year is because the guy who said he wanted to be my boyfriend had an asex aspie ex who spent his days playing Skyrim. He said that wasn't OK.

Now he's stuck with the actually crazy kids who pretend to be cool, but I hope he won't see this as me "playing video games on the computer and abandoning him".

I'm sorry you guys, but like I always said, I'll do the furries little good if I am dead, and I'll do you little good if I'm unhappy and lonely.

jsyk...

Wow, that's pretty funny and cute.

Didn't Borneo offer to help out or something, or does she not have enough time?

>> No.5083676

Alright. Here's how I think it's going to go:

- I am going to whimsically select a "secret ingredient" or theme for the battle,
- people are going to enter the contest using a form mentioning their name and tripcode,
- people will submit their dishes in a dedicated thread,
- once the round is over, the voting form will be opened, and people will be able to cast their votes.

Sounds fair?

>> No.5083689

>>5083676

The scoring is based on points. For each aspect (idea, ingredients, etc.) people are able to award one point to each challenger (or participant, contender, sport, etc.) for every aspect.

They are also able to say which participant they feel did not meet the round's theme.

So people who are voted out are eliminated (or penalized in the long-run, we'll see), and then each challenger can win in two major categories (creative and technical).

For each round, there are going to be a winner (who has won over both), three winners in the technical category, and three winners in the creative category.

Sounds OK?

>> No.5083694

>>5083676
>- I am going to whimsically select a "secret ingredient" or theme for the battle,
I'd be wary about 'whimsically' selecting an ingredient or theme as it does need some thought. For instance, people don't want to barbeque in the winter and the convenience store theme the other year didn't work out very well.
>- people are going to enter the contest using a form mentioning their name and tripcode,
Sounds good, I'd consider allowing just a name though if some people prefer. The really important thing is to make sure that people include their name in their photos, though, as with previous rules.
>- people will submit their dishes in a dedicated thread,
The effectiveness of this depends on how many people are going to be participating. I think having voting and submission in one thread, with voting always open, is nice for discussion and is more effective with less participants. The nice thing about keeping the threads separate, though, is that if there are many participants, it keeps things more organised.
>- once the round is over, the voting form will be opened, and people will be able to cast their votes.
More people will tend to vote for early submissions and less for later submissions so it's good to leave voting until after the round has finished. However, it reduces the amount of total votes because it just becomes a chore to vote for so many people at once, reducing fun for the voters, feedback, and total votes. I personally had more fun when I could vote during submission time.

Never again.

Shitty Categories completely destroyed the last competition.

Ramen? Really?

>> No.5083775

>>5083703

Not a single round.

Right now I am thinking three rounds with three or four heats, with a final competition during summer, so when it starts for real (next fall), it would be the 2014 - 2015 /ck/ Challenge. There would be three rounds (fall, winter, spring), and the summer main event.

Each round (season), there would be a few heats (trials) with a secret theme or ingredient or whatever (for the test round I am thinking salt, water, "warm" and maybe "cold"), and we'll see how it goes from there.

It's going to be a lot more relaxed, and I see nothing wrong with ramen. It, in itself, is one of the Chanese food groups. A lot of people on here live on ramen because they're broke and/or can't cook anything better. I see nothing wrong with that.

I love ramen and chicken fingers, myself.

>> No.5083827

Alright, so I think this is pretty much the shape it's going to take for the first test heat of the first test round (though this is only an example, it's still open for discussion/commenting).

This is the voting form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1AwwtAJiIjtGiIGAauKcBnqtk7KP_5mf6gIJXbHbJrhU/viewform

Rules and terms are still to be determined, but there really are none. If people think you failed, you'll be disqualified. That's pretty much it.

People will cast their votes at the very end, after the heat has ended and all submissions are in.

I think rounds and heats will be announced on Sunday afternoons, and will end on Friday afternoons. Voting will take place during the weekend.

To avoid pic related.

I understand, however, that not everyone is on a M-F schedule and in my time zone, and this might be subject to change, or there might be an offset in the schedule for each heats within each round along the 7-day week.

>Please award the participants one or more point(s) for each of the following creative aspects:

You could do drop-down lists with 1-10 scores for each participant in each category if that's what you want to.
