http://www.takepart.com/article/2013/10/18/chipotle-phase-out-gmos-and-raise-prices-2014

>Chipotle CEO Steve Ells said in a company conference call yesterday that the chain will phase out genetically modified ingredients in 2014.

>That change, however, will likely come at a cost. Ells also announced that Chipotle may increase prices next year.

>while the tortillas and cooking oils will be GMO-free sometime in 2014, the chain won’t be able to eliminate all genetically engineered ingredients from its restaurants.

>“Right now there is really no way to find adequate supply of animals that have not eaten any crops containing GMO ingredients,” Ells says about non-GMO meats, which Chipotle will not be purchasing. Similarly, high-fructose corn syrup-sweetened sodas will continue to contain GMOs.

And I believe that the threads of people saying "chipotle is the greatest thing ever" has to be some sort of marketing campaign. There is no way they would pop up with such a high frequency. There is almost always one on the first page.

Yes, and they're overpriced shit, just like Chipotle. They're fast food for people who want to deny the fact they're eating fast food. It's pure aspirational marketing based on class insecurity..

I'm not class insecure. And when I choose to eat fast food I don't need to pay extra to pretend it's something else. I don't give a fuck what the boys in marketing come up with.

Fast food is a necessary evil, because there are situations where it's your only option. But it's still accepting defeat - accepting that I got myself into a situation where that was the best I could do.

And faux-upscale fast food doesn't lessen that sense of defeat for me. If anything it just rubs my nose in the fact that I'm paying what I ought to be paying for something good, but still getting fast food.

That's not being superior, ninny, that's being desensitized.
You are oversimplifying and projecting an overreaction by anyone who doesn't eat fast food. When you stop questioning and doing the critical thinking about life, your place in it, and the choices you make, and why, then you put a huge damper on your growth as a human being and the growth of human kind in general. That's one of the serious problems with this "information age", no one has to do the critical thinking anymore and everyone can lash out, using subpar education and poor reference materials and in some cases, pure lies and made up "facts". Having standards, or trying to attain personal bests, or not allowing mediocrity in whatever areas of life you choose, is much more of a "useful skill" as you put it, than your ability to accept anything.

I'm the Anon who referenced the boys in marketing. My point was that this distinction between fast food and fast casual is meaningless when what you get is still fast food. So I refuse to accept it, regardless of how it's marketed. Because I've eaten in these places, and found them just as disappointing as fucking Taco Bell. Just a little more expensive because they're aimed at a wealthier crowd.

Same goes for Whole Foods. I know how they're trying to market it. A place where concerned shoppers can pay a little extra for the hope that words like "organic", "cruelty free" and "local" are in some way meaningful. But when I go there my experience is just that of another posh supermarket where groceries cost a little more than I'm willing to pay, because I'm not getting anything out of the concerned, "good corporate citizen" copy pasted all over the place.

When the marketing says one thing, yet my experience says another I go with my experience, and have no problem derisively dismissing the marketing. Chipotle just happens to be a perfect example of this, for me.

No, you're the one obsessed with fast food. The world is vast and complicated, and here you are boiling everything down to fast food. Honestly, you need to find more worthwhile things to worry yourself about, because constructing your life identity around being that guy who has gone 600 days without processed garbage is shallow and pedestrian. There are entire cities of people who don't obsess over chain restaurants all day, there are even self sustaining communities of hippie farmers in some places who live the life, instead of just bragging on the internet about how angry you feel that marketing happens. Perhaps it gives you a jolt of superiority in your podunk southern town, much like a militant atheist gets a jolt of superiority for being abrasive about his personal theology because it's a reaction against his surroundings, but being able to see a Chipotle sign without flying off the handle isn't "accepting mediocrity", it's being a well adjusted human being.
